A fresh snapshot of Superman, unveiled by James Gunn, showcases Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.; however, numerous fans have mentioned on various occasions that Grillo’s hairstyle differs from how it appeared in the animated series of Creature Commandos.
In the animated series “Creature Commandos,” Grillo’s character, Rick Flag Sr., sports a white mane of hair. On the other hand, when he appears in “Superman,” his hair is black, leaving fans puzzled about the reason behind this change.
Turns out, there’s a reason, and Gunn didn’t hold back.
Gunn Blames Tulsa King
Previously, during an interview for the launch of Creature Commandos, Gunn mentioned that the shift was caused because Grillo had another job commitment on hand.
According to Gunn, since Frank Grillo was working on Tulsa King during our filming of Peacemaker, we initially planned for him to dye his hair white. However, someone recently asked if he could use temporary hair dye instead. But as it turns out, he hadn’t considered that option before.
Following along, I exclaimed, “That’s not appealing at all! Yes, I’m familiar with it, but it just seems dreadful when you’re trying to apply that grayish tone onto someone’s already deep black hair.
So Is This the Same Character?
In actuality, Grillo portrays the identical character of Rick Flag Sr., as seen in Creature Commandos. Gunn has confirmed that the DC Universe’s animation and live-action are interconnected. Moreover, you can find Grillo reprising his role in Peacemaker for its second season. However, it’s important to note that there may not be complete visual consistency due to practical considerations like real-world logistics and broadcast timetables.
In the picture you see, Grillo is depicted beside Gunn on set, and his hair appears significantly dark compared to the white-haired character version in animation. This difference ignited discussions online, but Gunn’s statement has since clarified this matter, even poking fun at poorly done hair dyes along the way.
When asked if Grillo’s hair could be white in the future, Gunn joked Rick Flag Sr. dyes his hair.
According to Gunn’s statement, “It appears that Rick Flag Sr., as shown in the series, is quite vain and easily influenced by women or when his ego is stroked. Consequently, I suspect he dyes his hair.” In Season 2 of Peacemaker, they showed a dyed beard, and also dyed hair, which is Rick Flag.
Gunn also happened to release the image for Frank Grillo’s birthday.
In a recent statement, Gunn mentioned that characters within the DC Universe aren’t limited to black or white; instead, they encompass various shades of gray. He specifically highlighted Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag, Sr., as someone who adds vibrancy even to these grayscale characters. Excited for fans to witness Grillo uniting the DCU in upcoming projects like Superman and Peacemaker, Gunn extended his birthday wishes to him! Happy Birthday, Frank!
On July 11, you can find Superman soaring into cinemas. Starting from the 21st of August (Thursday), Peacemaker’s second season will make its debut at 9 p.m. Eastern and Pacific Time on HBO Max.
