As a long-time fan of action-packed and humorous storytelling, I was absolutely thrilled to learn about Frank Grillo‘s journey into the DC Universe as Rick Flag Sr. The actor’s extensive background in both live-action and animated roles, coupled with his evident passion for the projects he takes on, makes me confident that this new chapter will be nothing short of spectacular.
Actor Frank Grillo, recognized for portraying Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Endgame,” is moving to James Gunn’s DCU and will take on the role of Rick Flag Sr. He can be seen in “Creature Commandos,” “Superman,” and the second season of “Peacemaker.
Lately, Grillo has given insights into what fans can anticipate from his character in Creature Commandos, discussed the differences between working within the DC Universe compared to his previous role as Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and voiced his opinions on a potential confrontation between Rick Flag Sr. and Peacemaker.
Have you been told by James a comprehensive account of Rick’s background before the occurrences in Creature Commandos, and what details about his past are you aware of so far?
Frank Grillo: No, since Rick isn’t extensively featured in any of the comics, he provided me with approximately ten to eight pages detailing Rick’s history and how he arrived at this location. He was instrumental in that, and then he said something like, “Here, use it as you see fit for Rick.” He granted me the creative liberty to incorporate a lot of my personal touch into Rick. This character bears a strong resemblance to myself.
So you get to put a lot of yourself into him?
As a gamer, I find that playing this character feels incredibly relatable because, like me, he possesses certain traits and beliefs. Now, as an actor, we’re usually taught to separate ourselves from our roles, but with this character, there’s a piece of myself that resonates deeply. His convictions in the world and his bond with his son mirror aspects of my own experiences, making the portrayal feel more authentic.
Could it be inferred that Rick, who remains remarkably calm while managing a team of unusual creatures, has extensive interaction or perhaps even prior experience with such entities?
Frank Grillo: I found the role similar to Men in Black, much like Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith dealing with all the extraterrestrials. For me, this universe became ordinary, as nothing about it seemed unusual given my character’s circumstances. It’s the same for Flag; he just asks, ‘What does that one do? What’s that one up to?’ Everything feels normal to him, and that’s what makes it enjoyable for me.
An unexpected dynamic that unfolded was the relationship between Eric and Rick. While Eric yearns for a best friend and seems to perceive something in Rick, it’s evident that Rick isn’t one to open up easily to many people. As the series progresses, we wonder if he’ll become more open and less guarded, or if he will remain closed off. Does his character evolve in this way?
Frank Grillo believes he will do it, considering it crucial. Initially, I believe he needs to because they are a team. However, I also sense his desire to do so. After the loss of his son, he’s become hardened and seems destined to either die or transform. It’s fascinating to observe that this band of outcasts has the power to bring about such change in him. It’s intriguing to note that he yearns for love and is ready to risk something to win the princess’ affection, creating an intriguing predicament as well.
Regarding your son’s narrative, it brings up his past with Rick Jr. Now, I find myself yearning for a scene where we could witness both you and Joel Kinnaman experiencing some sort of flashbacks that delve into their relationship dynamics. Could this be a possibility in the future, and is it something you yourself would like to see unfold?
Frank Grillo: Joel and I aren’t actually making our own movie, but just imagine if we did! I adore Joel, we’re friends, and I believe he’s a fantastic actor, and it could be intriguing to delve deeper into that. As for James, he hasn’t said anything about this, but if the audience shows interest, I’d be on board. It all boils down to whether you, the audience, connect with the characters and want to see more of them. If so, it could mean Joel might stick around, at least in a significant role. So we’ll have to wait and see how the audience responds to him.
As a devoted admirer, I’m curious to delve deeper into the narrative journey of Rick in the DC Universe, especially following the Creature Commandos series. Although you can’t reveal what lies beyond, could you perhaps share some insights about his character arc? How does this new storyline build upon or transform Rick’s character from the show and within the broader DCU context?
Frank Grillo’s main theme revolves around his career advancement within the DCU. This involves him assuming more significant roles and having control, allowing him to accomplish tasks that were previously limited. Essentially, it’s about how he manages this newfound responsibility.
Frank Grillo emphasizes his early and significant involvement in the project, stating that he’s not just a plot device but an integral part of its foundation. He notes that Rick Flag Sr., as established by James, is crucial for the story, and this aspect is important to him. He appreciates it and takes his role very seriously, always ready to participate in whatever James and Peter have planned for the project.
I have seen the first five, what should we look forward to in the final two episodes?
Frank Grillo: I believe that, for the most part, it’s hard to guess what will transpire. You might think you understand, but in reality, you don’t. This uncertainty is what makes it intriguing. Just like any outstanding series, you should watch it right up until the final moment of the last episode to fully appreciate it and get the most out of it. It’s this aspect that defines exceptional television.
Was it particularly alluring to have the ability to create a product that isn’t only animated, but also carries an R-rating, featuring a dark theme and morbid humor?
Frank Grillo: Absolutely! When I came across [the script], I instantly thought, “This is something I absolutely want to be a part of.” I’ve never experienced or seen anything quite like it before. It’s rated R and the fights are intense yet fantastic. There are passionate love scenes, and there’s no shortage of hilarious dialogue. At times, it’s downright funny. And much like James Gunn’s other works, it has a genuine heart. This role is an actor’s dream, and since it’s animated, I didn’t need to wear clothes – I could just show up in my underwear for the recording sessions.
Who wins in a fight, Rick Flag Sr. or Peacemaker?
Frank Grillo: It’s nearly there, it’s nearly there… But I suspect Flag has a bit more cunning. In combat, intelligence often prevails. From a fighter’s perspective, I can assure you that the wiser adversary usually comes out on top.
