Francis Lawrence Teases His Upcoming Stephen King Adaptation, ‘The Long Walk’

The novel “The Long Walk” by Stephen King has been challenging to translate onto the big screen, but that seems set to change as Francis Lawrence, who directed “I Am Legend”, is involved with the forthcoming movie version which is now in post-production.

Additionally, Lawrence is engaged in composing the movie’s soundtrack in London. He’s been vocal about his enthusiasm for the project, describing it as “truly exceptional.

For quite some time now, Lawrence has been an ardent admirer of “The Long Walk.” He even attempted to bring it to life at one point in the past. Following his reading of “I Am Legend,” he developed a desire to transform the novel into something else. However, it was Frank Darabont who eventually obtained the rights for adaptation.

Although numerous efforts had been made in the past without success, it is only now that things have finally clicked – thanks to collaboration with writer JT Mollner, who was also involved in ‘Strange Darling’. Lawrence attributes the project’s triumph to perfect timing, a gifted cast, and exceptional performances.

In the dystopian story titled “The Long Walk“, the narrative unfolds in a crumbling America where 100 adolescent boys participate in an excruciating contest. This competition involves walking continuously along US Route 1, starting from Maine and ending at Florida. To survive, they must strictly adhere to a speed of four miles per hour; otherwise, they’ll be eliminated by gunfire. The sole survivor is awarded an extravagant prize. The book predominantly revolves around the group of walkers for that particular year, and the upcoming movie will showcase talented actors such as Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, and Mark Hamill.

The evolution of this project spans decades, with George Romero contributing in the 1980s. Subsequently, Darabont owned the rights, but later, Lawrence assumed control over the project. After experiencing some setbacks, the film is now nearing its final stages, although a release date has yet to be announced.
