As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel astonished by the recent news from Fox. Despite my conviction that “The Simpsons” will continue to air even after humanity has vanished, leaving cockroaches to enjoy our animated legacy, this four-year renewal still manages to surprise me. Fox has generously extended the life of “The Simpsons” for an impressive span, and it’s not just my favorite yellow family getting this treatment.
In a move that delights adult cartoon enthusiasts like myself, Fox has also handed out four-year renewals to “Bob’s Burgers” and “Family Guy”. And It seems that Fox is determined to keep our laughter flowing for years to come.
20th TV Animation and Disney TV Studios have secured a groundbreaking deal, ensuring that all four of their animated series will air until the 2028-29 television season. This extended period of programming is being referred to as a “meganimation block,” offering a solid foundation for the network. The news of this massive renewal was initially reported at Deadline. It’s interesting to note that this deal, which includes the extension of Fox’s shows on Disney’s Hulu, was already in progress late last year. This timing aligns well with the exclusive agreement Fox signed with Hulu in November 2021, worth a staggering $1.5 billion. Now, Hulu holds the rights to Fox’s TV shows.
Each show’s season is expectedly slated for 15 episodes, which is the minimum needed to be considered a complete season. This agreement also reunites “American Dad!” with its initial network. The series initially premiered on Fox in 2005, but moved to TBS in 2014. Its broadcast ended there recently.
This “meganimation” refresh means that “Bob’s Burgers” will end its 19th season, while “Family Guy” will reach at least its 27th. Similarly, “American Dad!” will conclude its 23rd, and “The Simpsons,” with this extended renewal, will mark the beginning of its record-breaking 40th season.
One day, “The Simpsons” will complete its 40th season, regardless of whether any humans are present to witness it. However, it’s unlikely that this long-running series will continue with numerous four-year renewals throughout its journey. The cockroaches, in the absence of complex streaming contracts, won’t have such concerns to deal with.
