Fortnite is finally returning to iOS in the US next week after almost five years

Back in the day, when Epic unveiled that humorous 1984-style ad, slamming Apple for their app store monopoly, it felt like a distant dream. But now, after almost five years, it seems we’re on the verge of seeing Fortnite back on iOS in the US!

The events kicked off in August 2020 when Epic Games attempted to bypass Apple’s policy of claiming 30% of all transactions within the App Store, such as buying Fortnite’s V-Bucks on an iOS device. This action led to Apple removing Fortnite from their store, initiating a legal dispute between the two corporations.

2023 saw Fortnite reappear on iOS devices across all European Union countries, facilitated by the Digital Markets Act. This legislation prompted ongoing legal battles in the US, but now, progress is imminent. Recently, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers decided that Apple may no longer impose fees for transactions outside of their App Store and cannot restrict developers from guiding users to alternative marketplaces.

After this decision, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, posted a tweet indicating that “Fortnite will be back on the US version of the iOS App Store next week,” along with an olive branch. Sweeney’s suggestion is that if Apple applies this U.S.-only ruling globally, Epic will withdraw all ongoing and future lawsuits related to the matter.

If the possibility becomes reality, but as a US Fortnite player on iOS devices, you’ll soon have the opportunity to rejoin battles, perfect timing for the upcoming Star Wars collaborations, which include an exclusive Fortnite preview of Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld.
