Former Sony President: Remasters are a Financial Backbone for New Games

As I reminisce about my time leading Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Worldwide Studios from 2008 to 2019, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride in shaping the iconic PlayStation brand. During my tenure, I had the privilege of overseeing the creation of countless titles and the strategic growth of Sony’s gaming portfolio, helping us reach new heights in the gaming world.

During a chat with Greg Miller from Kinda Funny, Yoshida delved into the impact of remasters and remakes in the gaming world. He admitted that some gamers may perceive an excess of these re-released titles, but they play a significant role. Yoshida underscored that remasters are often managed by specialized teams or external studios, thus preserving resources for fresh game creation.

It’s crucial to consider the financial side of things. Creating fresh single-player games these days is getting more costly. On the other hand, remasters and adaptations (for different platforms) are less expensive to make and provide extra income sources. Moreover, they help introduce popular franchises to new groups of players, particularly when they’re brought to systems like PC. This approach not only increases revenue but also broadens the fan base for existing concepts.

While it’s not always certain that remasters will be successful, quality plays a crucial role. This is evident in the varied responses to the Grand Theft Auto Definitive Edition Trilogy. It’s important to make sure that remastered games either match or surpass the original’s quality to preserve players’ trust and contentment.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve come to appreciate the significance of remasters and remakes in our gaming world. These updates not only serve as a lifeline for creating fresh, innovative titles but also breathe new life into timeless classics, ensuring they remain enjoyable for both seasoned and novice players alike.
