Miriam Margolyes, famous for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter movies, has criticized HBO’s new TV series based on the popular books.
The 84-year-old actress, known for winning a BAFTA for her performance in the 1993 Martin Scorsese film The Age of Innocence, recently discussed her views while on the Capital Breakfast show.
When asked about her previous criticisms of the Harry Potter books, Miriam Margolyes suggested that fans should have moved past it. She explained that while the series wasn’t a personal childhood favorite, it did provide her with financial success.
Margolyes stated she would not be involved in HBO’s planned remake, scheduled to debut in early 2027. She explained, “I wouldn’t have agreed to do it. I don’t understand why they’re making another version when the original was already excellent. It seems like it’s just about making more money, and they really don’t need it – the original producers already earned a lot!”
HBO is creating a new Harry Potter series, a collaboration between HBO Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films. The show will feature Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid also starring in key roles.
This new adaptation is dedicated to accurately recreating the world of J.K. Rowling’s books. Francesca Gardiner is overseeing the series as showrunner, and Mark Mylod is directing. Casting for the lead roles began in late 2024, and the team reviewed over 32,000 actors before making their final choices. Filming started in July at Leavesden Studios in England, and the first season will have eight episodes.
Ruth Margolies isn’t the only one with concerns. Chris Columbus, the director of the first two Harry Potter movies, has also questioned whether a new series is necessary.
