As a seasoned gamer who’s seen his fair share of comic book adaptations, I can confidently say that the upcoming DCU series, Lanterns, has me absolutely beaming with anticipation! The involvement of Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and none other than Tom King, the Eisner Award-winning author who used to be an undercover CIA agent, is a recipe for an unparalleled narrative experience.
As a die-hard gamer (and comic book fan), I can’t help but get excited about the future of DC Universe (DCU). James Gunn has stepped in, revamping what was once known as DCEU, and next year marks its official debut. Although we haven’t gotten much of a sneak peek yet, there are plenty of projects lined up, and one I can hardly wait for is the upcoming Lanterns series.
Chris Mundy, who is currently working on “True Detective: Night Country,” will be taking on the role as showrunner and executive producer, in addition to co-writing the series “Lanterns” together with Damon Lindelof (known for his work on “Watchmen”) and comic book writer Tom King (famous for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” and his past run on the “Batman” comics).
In this piece, our spotlight will be on Tom King, and we’re excited to unveil further insights into his personal life, along with some intriguing thoughts he shared about the upcoming Lanterns project. We’ve come across two captivating interviews that we can’t wait to delve into with you in this article.
Born on July 15, 1978, Tom King is a renowned American comic book writer, particularly recognized for his works such as “The Vision” for Marvel Comics, “The Sheriff of Babylon” for DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, “Batman,” “Mister Miracle,” and “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” for DC Comics. In addition to his acclaimed comic book stories, he also penned the novel “A Once Crowded Sky.” Interestingly, before gaining fame in the comics world, King worked as a covert CIA agent! Yes, that’s correct!
According to his statement to Business Insider, Tom King initially pursued a career in comics. However, when the editor at Marvel declared that the comic industry was dying, King shifted gears and studied philosophy and history at Columbia University. After graduating in 2000, he worked at the Department of Justice for more than a year. Inspired by stories his grandmother told him about his grandfather volunteering for the country after Pearl Harbor, King eventually chose to join the CIA.
Initially, King envisioned himself working at a desk, but his path led him to become a counterterrorism officer instead. Over the course of seven years, he worked in various countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan during the post-9/11 period. Contrary to expectations, King wasn’t destined to be a businessman dealing with chemistry; instead, he abandoned that notion, as he openly shared later on.
“Initially, I found it absurd when you called me a fake chemistry entrepreneur. Frankly, I don’t have any knowledge about the field of chemistry business. So, I switched my identity and started presenting myself as a comic writer instead. If anyone questioned me, they would likely ask about comics, and I would gladly engage with them on that topic.
There’s something truly captivating about writing that resonates deeply with me. My admiration for the CIA was genuine, and I found great satisfaction in my duties. However, I had an epiphany: ‘I find this even more fulfilling.’ It just feels like a natural extension of myself. The crux of being a CIA officer isn’t about the action-packed elements – it’s empathy. In my role as a case officer, my mission was to encourage people to spy on others.
To discover shared traits among them, it was necessary for me to delve into their minds, grasp their desires instantly, identify ways to enhance their lives, and comprehend their driving forces.

After becoming a father, King decided to leave the CIA behind and rekindle his passion for comic books. This change seemed to pay off, as he went on to lead numerous series and even received several accolades. So, it’s safe to say his comics career has been quite prosperous.
Currently, Tom King is busy developing the forthcoming HBO series titled “Lanterns“. In a recent interview, he shared intriguing insights regarding the show.
In my circle, I knew Neal Adams, a key figure behind the creation of John Stewart. Whenever he was around me, it seemed like he’d be urging me, “Remember your roots, kid!” The trio, which included Damon and Chris, shared an immense affection for the subject matter. Our goal was to revisit these classic characters and demonstrate their continued significance in today’s world. We aimed to highlight how they can resonate with contemporary audiences as well as address the challenges we collectively face.

He also added that the DCU “feels like a DC renaissance. We’re at the beginning of creating an entirely brilliant world,” further expressing his excitement about the upcoming projects, one of which he himself is working on. In an earlier interview with ComicBookMovie.com, King confirmed this excitement clearly:
As thrilled as I am beyond belief, it’s like I’m orbiting a green lantern planet – that’s not quite the level of my excitement! I guess you could say I’m circling Oa? That’s some serious distance, let me tell you! Just feast your eyes on these two side by side. The chemistry between them is electric, and trust me when I say there’s never been a time when I was more pumped! As for the casting, it’s pure genius. When you gaze upon Kyle, you see a fearless aviator who embodies the spirit of Hal Jordan. And when you lay your eyes on Aaron, he radiates the heart, soul, and strength that defines John Stewart. He’s simply perfect for the role. Brace yourself – this is going to be an incredible ride!
