Kathleen Robertson has shared her experience joining the cast of Beverly Hills, 90210, describing it as a very daunting time. On the Slice of Life podcast, the actress explained that starting on the popular show in 1993 made her incredibly nervous and anxious.
Robertson, who first appeared on the show during its fourth season in a smaller role, remembers the set not being the welcoming place a new actor would expect. The series was hugely popular at the time, and the original cast had a strong, established relationship, making it very challenging for anyone new to fit in.
She described a disturbing incident where she found her continuity photos—the pictures used to ensure her makeup and costume stayed consistent—cut in half in the makeup trailer. She believed someone on set deliberately did this as a hostile act.
When she asked the makeup artists about the altered photos, they seemed uncomfortable and confessed they were trying to hide the problems happening behind the scenes. Even though people were distant and unwelcoming, Robertson insisted she was resilient and wouldn’t let the conflict affect her work.
The experience stayed with her, especially as she took on leadership positions on other film sets. While playing the lead role in the 2014 crime drama Murder in the First, Robertson realized how challenging it can be for newcomers and made a point of being especially welcoming to guest stars.
Although the environment was generally unwelcoming, Robertson specifically praised Tori Spelling. She described Spelling as consistently warm, friendly, and welcoming from the very beginning, which made a difficult situation much more bearable.
After three seasons, the actress chose to leave the show because she worried staying would limit her career development. She remembered a clear moment realizing she needed to leave to protect her future.
After becoming known in the Beverly Hills area (90210), Robertson has built a successful career as an actress and writer. She’s particularly well-known for playing Hildy Mulligan on the show Murder in the First, where she acted alongside Taye Diggs as a detective working on challenging, season-long cases in San Francisco.
She’s become a well-known writer and producer recently, notably developing the 2022 series Swimming with Sharks and working on a movie based on the book Little Bee. She’s also appeared on television, including a main role in the final season of The Expanse and in the Netflix drama Northern Rescue.
People have always been interested in what happened with the cast of 90210, and thankfully, many of them have made amends in recent years. Jason Priestley recently shared that he and the late Shannen Doherty had resolved their differences and were at peace with each other before she passed away in 2024, explaining they’d both had the chance to say everything they needed to.
