As a longtime fan and supporter of Foo Fighters, I wholeheartedly applaud their recent decision to donate the royalties from “My Hero” to Kamala Harris’ presidential fund. In a world where principles often seem to take a backseat, it is refreshing to see a band as influential as Foo Fighters standing up for what they believe in.
According to reports, Foo Fighters plan to contribute the earnings from their “My Hero” song to Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, following an unapproved performance of the track by Donald Trump at a rally featuring RFK Jr.
In a strong and daring move, the rock group Foo Fighters have expressed strong disapproval over Donald Trump’s use of their popular song “My Hero” at his rally last weekend. On August 26th, representatives for the band revealed to People magazine that they will be channeling the royalties from this song towards Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.
The Foo Fighters’ representative firmly stated that they had not given their approval for the use of one of their songs in that specific situation. Moreover, the band members, which consist of Dave Grohl, Josh Freese, Pat Smear, Rami Jafree, Chris Shiflett, and Nate Mandel, plan to channel their royalties towards Governor Tim Walz’s campaign along with Kamala Harris.
The event transpired following Trump’s performance of “My Hero” at an Arizona rally, which occurred shortly after Kennedy endorsed him.
Last Friday, August 23rd, the rock band made it clear they did not authorize the use of their song on platform X, in response to a fan’s query about Trump using ‘My Hero’. They simply answered, “No”. Later, this conversation was posted across their social media platforms with the caption, “Let us make this crystal clear.”
Besides the Foo Fighters, several other artists such as Celine Dion and Beyoncé have made it clear they do not approve of their music being used in Donald Trump’s promotional materials.
According to USA Today, Beyoncé, known for her song “Lemonade,” sent a cease and desist letter to the former U.S. President due to unauthorized use of their joint song “Freedom” (featuring Kendrick Lamar). The video posted by Steven Cheung on X showing Trump exiting a plane with Beyoncé’s song playing has been removed following her legal action.
On August 9th, there was a commotion regarding the unauthorized use of Céline Dion’s rendition of ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from Titanic at a rally for Donald Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance in Bozeman. Quickly responding to this, her team clarified that this usage was not authorized and Celine Dion does not endorse or support such events.
Concerning “My Hero,” Cheung stated to The Hill that he holds a permit to perform the song. He didn’t hesitate to challenge Foo Fighters on social media, alleging they were being dishonest and neglectful in their fact-checking.
