Matthew Lewis, known for portraying Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films, has recently discussed the new TV series adaptation of the beloved franchise.
The series, which was revealed in 2023, will feature actor Rory Wilmot from Yorkshire stepping into the role of Neville. However, Lewis shared that he hasn’t given the show much consideration.
“I honestly haven’t given much thought to the entire series,” Lewis explained to The Independent. He playfully added that considering it all might be overwhelming, saying “I’ll likely need to book a longer session with my therapist once I actually start to think about it.”
Lewis expressed his delight that the new Neville is also from Yorkshire. “It’s really touching to me that Neville is now officially a Yorkshire character. I’m going to take that as a compliment, though I’m not sure if it’s *intended* as one! But honestly, the last thing the new cast needs is older actors interfering – they should just be allowed to do their thing,” he said.
Lewis was asked if he’d be willing to collaborate with J.K. Rowling again, and he said it would “depend on the specific project.” He explained that he’d need to be comfortable with the work and ensure it aligned with his values, particularly considering the debate around Rowling’s statements regarding transgender rights.
This follows Emma Watson – who famously portrayed Hermione Granger – also expressing her thoughts on the matter.
Watson has spoken about her disagreement with Rowling while still appreciating her personally.
During her podcast interview with Jay Shetty, Watson explained, “What bothers me the most is the lack of open discussion. Just because I went through that experience and have certain feelings and beliefs doesn’t mean I can’t still deeply care for Jo and remember the person I knew. I’ll never think those two things cancel each other out.”
Watson expressed her desire for everyone to treat each other with respect, even when they disagree. “I truly hope that even those who have different views from me can still care for me, and I want to continue to care for people even if I don’t share their opinions,” she explained.
However, Rowling responded to Watson with a lengthy post on social media, where she described Watson’s opinions on the rights of transgender people as “ignorant”. She also implied that Watson’s previous positive comments about her were likely due to shifts in what the public thought.
Rowling states that their friendship began to falter in March 2022 following Emma Watson’s appearance at the BAFTA Awards. At the event, Watson voiced her support for transgender individuals.
There’s been a lot of discussion about this, so I’d like to clarify a few things.
I don’t expect anyone who previously played a character I created to always agree with me. That expectation is ridiculous – it would be like asking my former boss from when I was twenty-one what my current opinions should be…

For years, Watson and Rowling shared a strong connection, and Watson frequently praised Rowling’s guidance. However, disagreements on important social topics ultimately caused tension in their relationship.
