As a passionate movie reviewer, I’ve got to admire the spirit of ambition and daring that Florence Pugh embodied during the filming of Marvel’s Thunderbolts*. She was determined to push boundaries and accomplish the seemingly impossible, which is what makes life so thrilling. In fact, when it came to performing a death-defying stunt involving a leap from one of the world’s tallest structures, not even the intimidating Marvel legal team could dissuade her.
Pugh revealed that she relentlessly pursued her vision for this mind-blowing stunt, going as far as to bombard Kevin Feige with endless emails to make sure her point was clear. It’s not just about jumping off a high building; it’s about sheer determination and courage. Here’s what Pugh had to say about her unyielding pursuit of this daring stunt in Thunderbolts*.
To clarify, Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia currently holds the title of the second-highest building globally, standing at approximately 2,722 feet. In the film Thunderbolts, Yelena, played by Pugh, was initially intended to leap off this tower. However, Pugh was determined not to let a stunt double take all the thrill. Pugh expressed her thoughts, “I got on every email. It was in the script, and then as we approached filming, they said they didn’t think it would happen due to complex insurance issues and obviously, we wouldn’t risk throwing [me] off the second-highest building in the world. I was like, ‘What? Of course we are! We have to do that.’
Without a doubt! It’s safe to assume that Thunderbolts Health and Safety were thrilled by this development with Pugh. Pugh goes on to say, “I was being quite feisty, sending emails to Kevin [Feige] suggesting it would be great for the press tour. We needed to do it! We’d break three different Guinness World Records with three women, and we’d accomplish this and that. I kept pushing, and then they replied, ‘If you want to jump off the second-tallest building, we’ll find a way.’ Heights don’t bother me, in fact, I enjoy them, but this was a whole new challenge and absolutely insane. The mental strength I had to summon that day was like having superpowers of its own.
To give you an idea of how demanding the Thunderbolts* stunt was, Pugh shares additional details about its aftermath. “I slept for three hours following the stunt because my mind [shut off].” Wow, that sounds intense! Someone should nominate Pugh for the Stunt Hall of Fame alongside Tom Cruise. Given her performance, she certainly deserves it. And luckily, the Oscars have recently introduced a Stunt category…
In the film titled Thunderbolts, Florence Pugh joins forces with Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. This movie revolves around a group of individuals who are labeled as outcasts, compelled to unite in order to save the world and demonstrate that they’re capable of rising above their past mistakes.
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* releases in theaters on May 2.
