The horror movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which came out in 2025 and is based on the popular video game series, has been released in theaters. However, critics generally haven’t been impressed with it.
As a big fan of the first movie, I was really excited to see Emma Tammi direct the sequel, with Scott Cawthon writing the script. It’s fantastic they brought back Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard to reprise their roles! They’ve also added some great new faces like Skeet Ulrich, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, and Teo Briones. The story picks up a year after the first film and centers around Abby Schmidt, and how she starts connecting with the animatronics again, which really starts to uncover the secrets behind Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

The movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 had its first showing at the TCL Chinese Theater on December 2nd and was released nationwide by Universal Pictures on December 5th. Critics haven’t been impressed, with a 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 53 reviews, and audiences generally agree.

Most reviewers found the movie to be fairly predictable and geared towards kids and teens, and it didn’t quite succeed in being scary or suspenseful like a typical horror film.
Most reviews indicate the new movie relies too much on callbacks to the original game, offering little fresh material. This makes it primarily appealing to longtime fans, but likely to leave casual viewers feeling underwhelmed. Critics also found the story, speed of events, and frightening moments to be less effective than in the first film.
Honestly, watching this movie, a lot of the plot points felt really obvious. It wasn’t very subtle, and it felt like it was aiming for a much younger audience – a bit disappointing, really. It just lacked the depth I was hoping for.

This movie is a weak and forgettable B-movie that doesn’t deliver any scares, excitement, or satisfying action.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is really aimed at those who already love the first game. For other players, it feels like a patchwork sequel that doesn’t offer many thrills or unexpected moments.

If you’re not excited about seeing familiar characters reimagined, or if you’re looking for more than just a few mild scares in a movie, you should probably avoid Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.
