‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Rakes in Triple Its Budget During First Weekend Despite Poor Reviews

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, from Universal, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster, opened to a successful weekend at the box office, bringing in $109.1 million globally.

The film performed better than expected, earning $46.1 million internationally from 76 countries. Its production cost is estimated to be between $36 million and $51 million.

This horror movie is a sequel to the 2023 film, and it continues the story inspired by the popular video games created by Scott Cawthon.

Emma Tammi directed the film, based on a script by Cawthon. Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Theodus Crane, and Matthew Lillard reprise their roles from the last movie. Joining them are new cast members Freddy Carter, Skeet Ulrich, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, and Teo Briones.

Picking up a year after the first movie, the story centers on Abby Schmidt (Piper Rubio) as she gets back in touch with her robotic pals. What happens next uncovers the history of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

Back in 2018, Cawthon said a second movie could happen if the first one did well, and it would likely follow the story of the second game in the series.

Although the film started well, critics generally disliked it. Only 12% of the 81 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were positive.

Critics generally didn’t like Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, describing it as even worse than the first film and comparing it to a broken robot. Metacritic gave it a score of 26 out of 100, based on reviews from 23 critics. While audiences gave it a “B” grade on CinemaScore, that’s a lower score than the original film received.
