Five More Charged in 2023 Overdose Death of Robert De Niro’s Grandson

Five additional people have been arrested in connection with the death of Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, the grandson of actor Robert De Niro. According to court records, these men are facing federal charges for allegedly selling the drugs that caused his death last July.

Prosecutors state that the men operated as part of a network selling counterfeit prescription pills throughout New York City and Long Island.

Authorities claim individuals used social media to sell counterfeit pills made to look like Xanax. These pills, however, contained the dangerous drug fentanyl. Investigators believe these fake pills led to the deaths of three 19-year-olds over the summer of 2023, one of whom was De Niro-Rodriguez.

Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, the son of Robert De Niro’s daughter Drena, was found unresponsive in his Manhattan apartment after a 911 call brought police to the scene. He was an only child.

He had just moved to New York City two days before he died to begin a theater internship on Broadway. The medical examiner determined his death was accidental, caused by a combination of several drugs including fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine, and cocaine.

Following the death of her son, Drena De Niro expressed her grief on social media, revealing that he had been given pills laced with fentanyl. She stated that someone knowingly sold him these dangerous pills and directed strong condemnation towards those who continue to buy and sell drugs, emphasizing that her son’s death is a permanent loss.

Robert De Niro shared a statement expressing his deep sadness over the loss of his grandson, Leo. He and his family are grateful for the support they’ve received and have asked for privacy as they mourn.

I’ve been watching Leandro’s career take off, and it’s amazing to see him following in his family’s acting tradition. He’s already been in a few films – I remember seeing him in The Collection back in 2005, and more recently in Cabaret Maxime and A Star Is Born in 2018. It was really cool seeing him and his mom play mother and son in A Star Is Born, especially with Dave Chappelle also in the movie!

As a movie buff, I always appreciate seeing the ‘bad guys’ finally get their comeuppance, and this feels like a step in that direction. It’s good to hear that prosecutors are trying to bring some justice to the families hurt by these fentanyl-laced drugs. The charges have been filed, which is a big deal, but it sounds like the investigation is far from over – they’re still piecing everything together, which is honestly a little unsettling.
