First Look: Dwayne Johnson Brings ‘Moana’ to Life in Disney’s Live-Action Teaser

Disney has released a first preview of its live-action Moana movie, offering fans a first glimpse of this reimagining of the beloved 2016 animated film. Catherine Lagaʻaia makes her film debut as Moana, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprises his role as the demigod Maui.

Thomas Kail is directing the new musical adventure film. Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller wrote the script. Dwayne Johnson isn’t only starring in the movie, but he’s also a producer, working with Hiram Garcia, Dany Garcia, and Beau Flynn.

In June 2024, Catherine Lagaʻaia was officially cast as Moana. She’ll be joined by a talented cast including John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina (Moana’s mother), and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.

The movie was filmed between July and November 2024 in Atlanta and Hawaii. Walt Disney Studios is producing the film alongside Seven Bucks Productions, owned by Dwayne Johnson, and FlynnPictureCo.

Disney initially intended to release the film in June, but has now scheduled it for July 10, 2026. Disney explains this new date is exactly ten years after the first Moana movie was released.

Disney’s new trailer for Moana features stunning views of islands and the ocean, and introduces Moana as she begins her journey as a wayfinder. A particularly moving scene shows Moana powerfully singing “I Am Moana,” which is sure to excite fans.
