[First Look] David Tennant Transforms Completely in First Look at Gripping New ITV Drama

Anticipation is mounting for ITV’s upcoming drama series, The Hack, and we now have exclusive fresh images that breathe life into its narrative. This series, crafted by the acclaimed trio of Jack Thorne, director Lewis Arnold, and producer Patrick Spence, revolves around the true-to-life probe into phone hacking at Rupert Murdoch’s defunct News of the World newspaper.

Initially, Deadline revealed the project back in the beginning of the year, and it’s being jointly produced by Australian streaming platform Stan. The series features David Tennant portraying investigative journalist Nick Davies, a role he took on to expose the phone hacking scandal that occurred over a decade ago.

In the images provided by Deadline, Tennant is deeply engrossed in his character, with Robert Carlyle portraying Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook. Dave Cook, as depicted, was the one overseeing the investigation into the unresolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan – a significant aspect highlighted in the narrative of The Hack.

The project required a whole year for covert shooting and post-production work. Prior to being titled “The Hack“, the show went by several temporary names. As of now, neither ITV nor Stan has specified the release date for the series.

Apart from Tennant, Carlyle, and Rose Leslie, the cast features a wealth of gifted performers including Dougray Scott, Eve Myles, Adrian Lester, Katherine Kelly, Kevin Doyle, Neil Maskell, Lara Pulver, Lee Ingleby, Pip Torrens, Lisa McGrillis, Sean Pertwee, Robert Bathurst, Richard Pepple, Nadia Albina, Phil Davis, Ace Bhatti, Charlie Brooks, Paul Kaye, and Steve Pemberton. Other actors involved in the project are also noteworthy.

The infamous phone hacking incident was a major headline in the United Kingdom, resulting in the shutdown of the News of the World newspaper and the incarceration of its ex-editor Andy Coulson. Journalist Nick Davies penned an acclaimed book titled “Hack Attack: The Moment the Truth Overtook Rupert Murdoch” detailing his investigation into the matter.

Recently, the issue resurfaced as Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers publicly apologized to Prince Harry, agreed on a settlement, and acknowledged for the first time that illegal actions were performed by detectives affiliated with The Sun, their newspaper.

This production known as “The Hack” is brought to you by ITV Studios, in collaboration with Anonymous and AC Chapter One, a company supported by United Agents and Casarotto Ramsay. The team behind this venture has previously joined forces on the successful drama series “Mr Bates,” which aired in 2024, shattering viewership records and generating headlines for weeks on end.

Jack Thorne’s film production entity, named One Shoe Films, is additionally contributing to the project. Collectively, Thorne, Arnold, and Spence have garnered a grand total of eight British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

First look shared by Deadline.
