Firefly is coming back, this time as an animated series.
At Awesome Con, Nathan Fillion shared that a new animated Firefly series is well underway. According to Deadline, the show already has showrunners attached and a finished script.
Original cast expected to return
Nathan Fillion revealed the news while recording his podcast, Once We Were Spacemen, with several of his former castmates. Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau were all present, and they are all anticipated to return to their original roles.
Adam Baldwin is also expected to return as the voice of Jayne Cobb.

Who is making it and who is not involved
Nathan Fillion’s production company, Collision33, is creating a new animated version of the show, working with 20th Television Animation, who owns the rights to the original material.
Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are attached as showrunners, and a script has been completed.
Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is not involved in the animated project.
When it takes place in the Firefly timeline
This new series takes place between the end of the original TV show in 2002 and the movie Serenity from 2005. It aims to build upon the existing story and world without changing anything that’s already happened.

Fillion’s message to fans
Nathan Fillion shared with Deadline that the passionate fanbase of Firefly is the reason the show still resonates after 25 years. He believes bringing the show back is not only what fans want, but also what they’ve earned.
The tease campaign led straight to this announcement
This announcement comes after a week of popular social media posts with Nathan Fillion and other actors from the show. The videos gained millions of views and brought Firefly back into the public spotlight.

Firefly history: why the franchise never went away
Though it only aired for one season in 2002, the TV show Firefly found incredible success after it ended. Dedicated fans kept the series popular through DVD purchases, online streaming, fan events, and a continuous push for the show to continue.
The series takes place in 2517 and centers on the crew of Serenity, a small transport ship trying to survive on the fringes of a dominant government. Nathan Fillion stars as Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, a seasoned veteran of a past war who now leads his crew through risky jobs and constant challenges.
The story continued in 2005 with the movie Serenity, which reunited the original cast and brought the series to the big screen. The late Ron Glass also appeared in both the series and the film, playing the character Shepherd Derrial Book.
The franchise is now set to bridge the story between the TV show and the film, and the original actors are likely to reprise their roles.
