According to Ed Beach, the creative director at Firaxis, they are exploring the possibility of developing a third setting for the Age Transition in Civilization 7, which is expected to have a more challenging and severe atmosphere that they’ve dubbed “Collapse” within the team.
Beach mentioned that the new feature is currently undergoing testing, and we’ll require some time to determine if it seems enjoyable and aligns nicely with the game. If it does, we’ll explore when it would be appropriate to incorporate it into a future release.
In simpler terms, Firaxis has introduced a new Age Transition option named Continuity, which allows players to carry over most of their units and positions from one age to another, much like it was done in previous versions of the game series. On the other hand, the original Age Transition mode from Civilization 6 is now called Regroup and can still be selected as an option, available alongside Continuity.
Prior to the release of Civilization 7, Ed Beach mentioned in an interview with Newsweek that the original design for Age Transitions was more revolutionary than what eventually made it into the game at launch. As a result, some abandoned concepts could potentially be incorporated into the Collapse setting, leading to fragmentation of the player’s empire during the transition period.
The introduction of Age Transitions has proven to be a highly debated aspect within the strategic turn-based game developed by our team, as we had anticipated.
As a devoted fan, I found myself at Gamescom 2025, where Amplitude’s CEO, Romain de Waubert de Genlis, sent warm wishes to Firaxis for the success of Civilization 7. With a hint of anticipation in his voice, he predicted that Civ 7 and Humankind will one day hold as much influence in the world of strategy games as Civilization 5 did in its prime.
