The seamless transition of the UI to touchscreen devices is impressive, and the combat mechanics look promising, but the potential challenges in selecting abilities accurately, especially with jobs offering up to 11 different actions, gives me pause.

Tencent recently revealed a fresh trailer for the mobile version of Final Fantasy 14, demonstrating how the game’s fighting system operates on touchscreen devices for the very first time. To make it more suitable for playing on mobile devices, the user interface (UI) has been modified from the original MMORPG. Each job or class comes with several abilities that appear in the lower right corner of the screen, encircling a main attack button intended for continuous combos.

Players can rotate among these skills, with cooldown times clearly marked. The health and magical energy (mana) levels are shown at the screen’s base, keeping it recognizable for veteran players. However, the small size of these icons and texts might cause difficulties in selecting abilities precisely, particularly when certain roles provide up to eleven distinct actions.

The preview primarily highlights fight sequences for nine initial roles, however, it doesn’t demonstrate how characters move during battles. This absence might hint at a possible streamlined battle system that may omit position-based attacks, where the effectiveness of an attack is dependent on the character’s location in relation to the foe. Furthermore, there seems to be no depiction of dodging wide-area attacks, a feature usually vital in the original game. This might suggest a more stationary combat style or simply mirror the specific situations featured in the trailer.

In contrast to other classes that concentrate on one opponent, healing classes such as Scholar and White Mage are depicted as switching targets. This switch seems to be controlled by tapping directly on the screen, a method that could prove challenging in heated battles due to its potential for complexity.
