Make is make sense.
This year, instead of attending Comic-Con to publicize the launch of “Fantastic Four”, as they did with “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” last time, Kevin Feige has chosen to host an exclusive press interview at Marvel Studios.
The conversation turned to the significant financial flop of “The Marvels“, since it cost Disney hundreds of millions and didn’t even approach the billion-dollar earnings of “Captain Marvel”. It’s worth noting that the latter’s success was somewhat overshadowed by being released between “Infinity War” and “Endgame”.
In numerous reviews about the interview from different sources, there seems to be a mixed message surrounding Ms. Marvel, portrayed by Iman Vellani. While she’s being criticized for the underperformance of “The Marvels,” it’s also stated that Kevin Feige mentioned everyone desired this character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it’s further suggested that the low viewership of Ms. Marvel didn’t directly impact the performance of The Marvels.
So in the end, it is the fans to blame, as they didn’t watch Ms. Marvel on Disney+.
What did Kevin Feige say about Ms. Marvel?
According to Deadline’s report, it seems that a significant number of people didn’t purchase tickets for “The Marvels” as they hadn’t yet watched the previous series featuring Ms. Marvel on Disney+.
According to THR, Feige notes that the biggest challenge for “The Marvels” might be when viewers recognize Brie Larson from the billion-dollar hit Captain Marvel, but aren’t familiar with Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris, who were in a TV series. Some might think of passing on it.
Feige further explains through THR: “There was a strong urging from the company, and it didn’t require much persuasion for us to respond, ‘Fans have been requesting Ms. Marvel for years, and now we can make it happen! Oscar Isaac wants to play Moon Knight? Let’s do it! So, we found ourselves in the middle of this demand, but we also thought it would be exciting to bring these characters to life.
Feige remarks through Variety that he considers “Ms. Marvel” and “The Marvels” actress Iman Vellani as “one of our finest casting choices ever,” expressing his excitement to witness “her performances in the future.”
What about New Avengers?
Regarding that “somewhere,” one of the outlets asked about Young Avengers.
In response, Feige said, “Possibly, depending on the scenario. It’s about finding the most compelling narrative and the strangest blend of elements. Who would make an exciting combination? They could be each other since that’s what the Young Avengers represent, but also introducing some unexpected pairings.
Previously, I mentioned that if the Young Avengers ever appears, the actors would be approaching their mid-thirties. Surprisingly, it was announced the very next day that the project had been renamed “The Champions.
Who is the audience for Ms. Marvel?
It’s worth noting that while The Marvels attracted a significant number of MCU fans (mostly men), it seems women may not have been as represented in the audience. Furthermore, around 2 billion Muslims worldwide did not watch it. So, who is the intended audience for Ms. Marvel? This question apparently went unanswered by Feige, who also had access to Disney+ viewership data and knew that at the time of release, Ms. Marvel was the least-watched MCU series on the platform.
