Fede Alvarez Teases Going Into “Uncharted Waters” for ALIEN: ROMULUS Sequel

During the past summer, the movie “Alien: Romulus” left a lasting impression on many viewers. Directed by Fede Alvarez, this film skillfully combined elements from Ridley Scott’s original “Alien” and James Cameron’s “Aliens,” overcoming challenges posed by certain digital recreations. It managed to do something that others have attempted but failed in this franchise, as it was set between the first two films and achieved great success. A sequel now appears likely. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Alvarez discussed possible directions for the next installment. Here’s what he had to share about the potential continued storyline involving Cailee Spaeny’s character Rain in another installment of the “Alien” series:

Romulus,” a movie that left quite an impact. Directed by Fede Alvarez, this film successfully blended aspects from Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and James Cameron’s “Aliens.” Despite some issues with digital recreations, it managed to do what others have attempted but failed in the franchise—creating a compelling story set between the first two films. The success of “Romulus” has led many to anticipate a sequel. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Alvarez shared his thoughts on where the next chapter of the “Alien” saga might take us, focusing particularly on the continued adventures of Cailee Spaeny’s character Rain:

Rodo [Sayagues, my collaborator] and I are currently developing it, and we’re thrilled about its potential direction. We’ve essentially ticked off most of the boxes on my wish list for Romulus, and we’ve reintroduced elements that I had missed. Now, we’re venturing into unexplored territories. It’s going to be exhilarating to journey with characters familiar from this movie, to a part of the Alien universe never visited before, and to uncover sights never seen before.

Could this scenario suggest anything? If Rain takes on the role of Ripley, then the previous films in the series can serve as a guide. In these films featuring Sigourney Weaver, Ripley often found herself waking up from cryostasis in new environments and time periods. For instance, in Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, she perished only to be reborn in a different era. Thus, it’s possible that Rain (alongside her android companion Andy, portrayed by David Jonsson) will awaken from cryostasis in a completely new setting, not the one they were originally aiming for. In Aliens, Ripley was asleep for 57 years. We can only imagine the excitement if Rain wakes up well beyond where Alien: Resurrection left off in 2181. This presents a plethora of possibilities for Xenomorphs that we haven’t encountered before, and certainly ventures into uncharted territories. And we eagerly await this journey!
