The sci-fi horror movie ‘Alien: Romulus’ garnered mostly positive feedback from critics. They appreciated its striking visuals, the intense atmosphere, and Cailee Spaeny’s powerful acting performance. Many considered it one of the strongest sequels in the ‘Alien’ series, with some even drawing comparisons to the iconic ‘Aliens.’ Nevertheless, a few criticized its development of characters as shallow, finding the film’s narrative ambition wanting and its formulaic structure predictable. Some fans also disliked the “best moments” montage included in the movie.
Shortly after the premiere of ‘Romulus’, Álvarez shared during an interview that he had concepts for a follow-up film, but he was hesitant to jump right into it. Instead, he prefers to carefully craft the story and only produce a sequel if there’s significant interest from the viewers.
By October 2024, it was announced that the head of 20th Century Studios, Steve Asbell, shared they were developing a sequel idea and are near to sealing a contract with director Fede Álvarez, who has proposed a concept for the upcoming movie.
It appears that the agreement hasn’t been fully settled yet, but Alvarez is already considering future films for himself. Recenty, he hinted to Empire magazine that if there is a ‘Romulus’ sequel, he intends to steer the ‘Alien’ series into unanticipated territories.
The deal isn’t done yet, but Alvarez is already thinking about his next films. He mentioned in an interview with Empire that if there’s a ‘Romulus 2’, he wants to change the direction of the ‘Alien’ series.
Together with his co-writer Rodo Sayagues, he is brimming with anticipation about the potential opportunities they have in store and have already delved into several concepts they planned for ‘Romulus.’ He suggested that the subsequent installment will primarily focus on Cailee Spaeny’s character, Rain, and venture into unexplored realms of the ‘Alien’ cosmos, providing new adventures and revelations for viewers.
Rodo [Sayagues] and I are currently developing it, and we’re thrilled about its potential. We’ve nearly accomplished all the elements I desired for Romulus, and reintroduced aspects that had been missing for a while. Now, as we venture forward, we can explore uncharted territories. The prospect of journeying with familiar characters from this movie into a new corner of the Alien saga, and uncovering unknown elements, is incredibly exciting!
As a dedicated cinephile, I firmly believe that a direct ‘Romulus’ sequel would only materialize if we uncover a captivating narrative worth sharing. It’s crucial to remember that sequels should stem from authentic storytelling intentions, not merely because they can be made. I stand firm on this stance and would wholeheartedly engage in the project only when we have an idea robust enough to uphold the legacy of this esteemed franchise.
A common pitfall when creating sequels is doing so merely because the opportunity arises and due to the acclaim of Romulus. However, I would only consider making a sequel if we possess an exceptional concept, one that lives up to its name and merit.
