‘Fat Jokes Aren’t Funny’: Dylan Sprouse Reflects On Gaining Confidence To Resist Fat Jokes Towards His Suite Life Mom

As an ardent admirer of Dylan Sprouse, I find his unwavering stand against fat jokes and his advocacy for respectful humor truly commendable. His life experiences, particularly his confidence that was honed at a young age due to being a co-star in a popular show, have undeniably shaped his perspective on what is funny and what is not.

More recently, Dylan Sprouse shared that his robust build as a younger man helped him assert himself against jibes related to his co-star’s weight, Kim Rhodes, during their time working on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody together.

Dylan Sprouse doesn’t hesitate to voice his disagreement when it comes to inappropriate dialogue or jokes. During an interview on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live on August 1, he shared a notable incident from his days on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. He explained that he spoke up to a producer about modifying a joke that was disrespectful towards Kim Rhodes, who played his mother on the show and was pregnant at the time.

Dylan remarked, “I must admit, I don’t find fat jokes amusing. To me, there seems to be a more entertaining joke lurking elsewhere, unless the humor is self-deprecating or personal in nature.”

In his discussion on humor, Dylan Sprouse – known for sharing the screen with his twin brother Cole – expressed his thoughts on a particular type of joke. “I usually don’t find jokes that mock or comment on people’s appearances very amusing,” he said. “I believe there are more witty jokes out there, and let me tell you, starring in your own show at such a young age really boosts your self-assurance.”

Dylan’s physical build during his youth may have contributed to his choice to voice his opinions. He mentioned that as a younger person, he was somewhat overweight and it wasn’t until he turned 18 that he truly found his confidence.

Kim Rhodes, being pregnant while the series was being filmed, also mentioned Dylan’s helpful demeanor. On a podcast called Back to the Best in November 2023, she reminisced about his decision to pass on a joke about weight that had been prepared for him, demonstrating his consideration.

According to Rhodes, while I was on the show, I became pregnant, and the show chose to address it through making jokes about my weight. One particularly memorable moment for me was when Dylan had a line that was a fat joke, but instead of delivering it, he skipped over it repeatedly. This occurred during the flow of our dialogue, so every time there was a skip, it felt like a missed opportunity for laughter.

Rhodes continued by explaining that when a producer shouted at Dylan from offstage, “Cut! Dylan! Recite the line!”, Dylan retorted. He emphasized that he would never speak to a woman in such disrespectful terms, especially not this one. Instead, he urged them to come up with something humorous, and he would deliver it.
