Fastly’s Edge: A Turn in the Cloud

Fastly (FSLY +13.87%) closed Friday at $18.26. A jump, sure, but numbers on a screen rarely tell the whole story. They reported a good quarter, a record one, actually. The street likes a story, especially one with a hint of something new. This one involves AI, of course. Everyone’s chasing that particular ghost. Volume hit 55 million shares. A feverish pulse for a stock that usually runs a slow drip. It meant someone was buying, and buying with conviction. Or maybe just panic-covering. It’s hard to tell the difference these days.

The Static on the Line

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) barely nudged up, finishing at 6,836, a fractional gain. The Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) slipped a bit, to 22,547. The market’s a fickle dame. It gives with one hand and takes with the other. Cloudflare (NET +5.78%) and Akamai Technologies (AKAM +6.83%) also saw a lift. Investors are leaning into the AI traffic play. It’s a crowded room, but everyone thinks they have a seat at the table.

What It Means, If Anything

Fastly’s numbers weren’t bad. Revenue up 23% to $172.6 million. Adjusted EPS hit $0.12. Losses narrowed. It’s the kind of progress that gets accountants excited, and generally leaves the rest of us cold. But it suggests something is changing. Operating leverage is finally kicking in. After years of wandering in the wilderness, they might be finding a path.

Their 2026 outlook – $700 to $720 million in revenue – is ambitious. It implies this isn’t a fluke. Management is talking about AI cloud partnerships and ‘agentic AI workloads.’ A new buzz phrase, naturally. It’s a shift in perception. They’re trying to be seen as more than just a content delivery network. They want a piece of the AI action. Whether they get it is another matter. The sustainability of this re-rating depends on AI traffic. A lot of it. Enough to keep the revenue and margins moving in the right direction through 2026. It’s a tall order, in a market that chews up and spits out optimism on a daily basis. But for a moment, at least, Fastly has a flicker of hope. A small one, granted. But in this business, sometimes that’s all you need.
