In the comic book series “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, Marvel unveils authentic information about H.E.R.B.I.E., a robot character known as Humanoid Experimental Robot, B-Type, Integrated Electronics. Details include the identity of the actor lending his voice to this mechanical marvel.
Initially introduced in the 1978 Fantastic Four animated series, HERBIE later made his comic book debut, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Reed Richards (a.k.a Mister Fantastic) designed HERBIE with the assistance of a Xandarian collaborator, anticipating that this robot would aid them in their pursuit of Galactus.
H.E.R.B.I.E. Confirmed as Key Member of the Fantastic Four Team
Reflecting on my conversation with Empire Magazine regarding “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” I shared that, as a filmmaker, I view the android character as a cherished part of our extended family and an invaluable addition to the Baxter Building.
He plays an equally vital role as any other cast member, showing a mix of resilience and endearment. At times, he appears slightly overworked like a robot, but he is undeniably part of the family. His charm and cuteness are undeniable. He serves as Reed’s reliable assistant in the lab, ready to help with any experiment and always by his side, whether they are in New York City or exploring space.
Brought to life by a combination of remote-control practical FX, puppetry, and CGI
Marvel has officially unmasked the voice actor behind HERBIE, surprising many who believed it was Natasha Lyonne. However, it’s actually Matthew Wood, a renowned sound editor and voice artist, who gives HERBIE his voice. Known for his extensive work across various projects like Marvel’s “What If…?”, “X-Men ’97”, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, and numerous Star Wars productions, Matthew Wood is the man behind General Grievous and other iconic characters.
According to SFX supervisor Alistair Williams, our primary model boasts a fully mobile head and limbs. He’s been cruising around the set, performing tasks like tidying up, picking up toys, even mixing Martini cocktails…
Shakman said, ‘He’s charismatic and hilarious, but he can leave you heartbroken.’ I hope this represents the essence of the film.” (Alternatively, “Shakman remarked, ‘He’s both captivating and amusing, yet capable of causing heartache.’ Let’s hope that reflects the movie.”)
