Fantastic Four Trailer: The Thing’s Voice Is Horribly Wrong!

Marvel unveiled the trailer for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” however, much like all Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions from the last six years, it seems to be a single leap forward followed by a couple of steps back. So, what does this result in?

My reaction

Based on what I’ve seen on Facebook and Twitter, my response to the trailer for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is quite average. It seems closer in style to an MCU Disney+ series rather than the grand, theatrical summer blockbuster it’s intended to be.

I’m quite fond of the 60s-inspired futuristic feel. The music in the trailer particularly stands out as something I adore. Yet, there are aspects about the cast that haven’t completely won me over.

The Thing’s voice does not fit at all

Is there a particular reason that Ebon Moss-Bachrach is speaking in his regular voice for the character of “The Thing”? It seems quite dissonant and incongruous to me.

Ever since the 1967 animated series, The Thing has adopted a deeper tone of voice. Why tamper with something timeless? After all, he’s just a stone. At first glance, I thought Seth Rogen was providing his vocal talents for The Thing. Perhaps they found him too costly. Regardless, it seems that adjustments are necessary to suit The Thing’s voice better. As for “IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME!”, I can’t help but wonder what sort of sound he will make when uttering that phrase (if he ever does). Lastly, I have reservations about the CGI. He appears somewhat over-animated, veering too far from realistic depiction.

Girl boss

Up next is Vanessa Kirby portraying Sue Storm. She exudes a strong, confident aura in the trailer (perfect for The Marvels). Interestingly enough, her voice seems deeper than The Thing’s (a funny observation), and it carries an air of someone who might smoke heavily. In terms of physical presence, Vanessa Kirby appears to be taller even than The Thing. This has left me curious about the plot development. I hope the rumors aren’t true that Sue feels Reed has been stifling her throughout their lives. As I posted on Twitter, it wouldn’t surprise me if the reverse is also true – Reed may feel as if Sue has been holding him back all this time! What a twist!

Not much to go on, yet

Regarding Joseph Quinn’s portrayal of Johnny Storm, there isn’t a wealth of information to analyze. His performances as the Human Torch are passable, but the dyed hair (and eyebrows) could use some improvement. It might have been better if they had left his hair its natural color or added highlights instead.

We had John Krasinski

About Pedro Pascal, he’s consistently himself in every role he plays. We had John Krasinski, but we can’t seem to get him. It doesn’t add up unless Krasinski is too costly as well. Perhaps Krasinski declined after reading the script (six writers, no less!), who knows? Similarly, Pascal often chooses simpler roles now, so let’s hope the rumors aren’t accurate.

Big G is cool

Observing Galactus was quite a spectacle. Although he does have a somewhat odd appearance, I believe Galactus would seamlessly blend with the ’60s alternate Earth atmosphere. However, after that, my thoughts are not entirely clear. Recalling my recent re-watch of Iron Man, I found myself questioning, “What on earth transpired in the MCU?
