According to Nielsen, Fantastic Four: First Steps had the smallest audience of any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie when it first started streaming on Disney+.
The new movie, which brings a famous team of superheroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, had a slow start on streaming. It received only 4.9 million views in its first five days in the U.S., according to Nielsen data. This is the lowest number of views for any major Marvel movie released in theaters so far.
These numbers are unexpected, considering how well-known the Fantastic Four are. While some Marvel movies haven’t done great in theaters, they’ve generally done well on Disney+. For example, Thunderbolts, despite disappointing box office results, still garnered 5.5 million views on Disney+ within its first five days.
With 6.4 million views, Captain America: Brave New World performed well. Meanwhile, older Marvel films like The Marvels (5.3 million views) and Eternals (9.2 million views) also saw significant viewership.
Compared to the huge popularity of Deadpool & Wolverine, which gained 19.4 million views on Disney+ in just six days at the end of 2024, First Steps didn’t perform as well with streaming viewers. Deadpool & Wolverine proved that people still enjoy superhero movies, especially those that are new and different, or have a mature rating.
Recent data from Nielsen shows that some of the newer Marvel shows on Disney+ are seeing fewer viewers. Even with a lot of excitement beforehand and the debut of new characters, Fantastic Four: First Steps didn’t attract many viewers during its first week.
Recent Nielsen data shows how many people watched Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films on Disney+ during their first five days of release. Here’s a look at the viewership numbers for several films: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever drew 14.1 million viewers, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with 10.9 million. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had 9.7 million, Eternals 9.2 million, Captain America: Brave New World 6.4 million, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania 6.1 million, Thunderbolts 5.5 million, The Marvels 5.3 million, Black Widow 5.1 million, and Fantastic Four: First Steps with 4.9 million viewers.
Even well-known Marvel titles don’t always attract large audiences on streaming services. Although Fantastic Four: First Steps didn’t perform as well as expected, it makes us wonder if viewers are getting tired of Marvel content and how they’re reacting to the newest shows and movies on Disney+.
