It’s not surprising for me to tell you this, but sadly, the movie “Ballerina” has underperformed at the box office, falling short of its predicted earnings.
Some critics are penning pieces speculating as to why the movie flopped, seemingly with an ulterior motive. However, the reason can be simply stated: audiences aren’t interested in a female equivalent of John Wick.
Really, they don’t want anybody else but Keanu Reeves as John Wick (who watched The Continental?).
What is the Ballerina box office?
Initially, projections suggested an opening weekend revenue of at least $31 million; however, recent adjustments put the figure between $25 million and $27 million, as attendance by fans has been lower than expected as the weekend unfolds. This isn’t surprising in the slightest.
Fans not interested in female assassins movies
I don’t think there’s been one successful female assassin movie.
David Leitch, the joint director of the original “John Wick” movie, despite not receiving recognition on IMDb, moved on to direct the action film featuring a female assassin, titled “Atomic Blonde“. This movie garnered a global revenue of $100 million and $51 million in domestic box office, with an opening weekend gross of approximately $18.2 million, which equates to around $23.82 million in today’s currency – not far off from the earnings of “Ballerina“.
Instead of suggesting Marvel’s latest female assassin movie, Black Widow, which unfortunately didn’t perform well at the box office, how about considering Thunderbolts, starring the MCU’s new female assassin character? But it seems that film also faced a similar fate as DC’s Harley Quinn, which similarly underperformed.
Fans sick of the BS
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel frustrated when my cherished franchises are inundated with what seems like obligatory feminist messages. These messages don’t appear to be organically woven into the narrative, but rather, they seem more like tools for advancing an agenda.
1. “How have The Marvels and Madame Web fared?”
2. “What’s the status of Doctor Who and Disney Star Wars?”
3. “How is the MCU doing, and how much DEI funding did Lionsgate receive to produce Ballerina?”
4. “Who requested for the production of Ballerina?”
Know your audience: it’s dudes
99.9% of the people who will watch these movies are men. It seems unlikely that petite women could overpower large men, unless there’s a lot of explicit content. Is there any in Ballerina? Does Ana de Armas show off her dance moves? Could anyone believe Ana De Armas could defeat John Wick? I’m just stating my thoughts honestly. I won’t apologize for it.
Did you even know The Walking Dead‘s Norman Reedus is in Ballerina (just play Ghost Rider, dude!)?
Is the genre dead?
We can also question if the lone assassin type of movies have run their course?
Lately, I caught “The Accountant” and “A Working Man” starring Jason Statham, but unfortunately, neither of them exploded at the box office – earning just $100 million each. Despite this, I’d say they don’t compare favorably to their earlier films in terms of quality.
Note about the shill reactions
Incidentally, let’s discuss the reviews as well. There seems to have been a situation where Lionsgate’s PR team sent out information exclusively to “shill reviewers,” who then posted favorable comments on social media. I find it puzzling that these shill reviewers caused such an uproar. It’s quite unusual, isn’t it? I mean, have there ever been negative early reactions from these shill reviewers about anything? It’s almost comical!
Final note
They desire Keanu Reeves to play the character of John Wick, with no other actor in mind.
Moving on, the upcoming movie in this genre seems to be “Nobody” 2, set for release on August 15, 2025. The original film earned approximately $57.5M and was quite impressive, so it’ll be intriguing to find out how the sequel unfolds.
