Fans Rediscover Crazy Alternative Ending for ‘Revenge of the Sith’

As someone who grew up with the original trilogy and was there when the prequels were first released, I have to say that my feelings about the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy are quite complex. I remember the outrage over Phantom Menace, the eventual acceptance of Attack of the Clones, and the relief we all felt when Revenge of the Sith finally delivered a satisfying conclusion to Anakin Skywalker’s story.

It’s clear that we all cherish the initial Star Wars trilogy. George Lucas’ innovative perspective shaped the space opera genre and produced timeless movies that will continue to captivate us. However, recall the reaction when the Prequel Trilogy debuted? Yes, by the time Revenge of the Sith was released, fans felt more content with the plot, but do you remember the wave of criticism that hit Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace when it first premiered?

Back in the day, when the Prequel Trilogy first hit the screens, it didn’t exactly set my heart aflutter. But over time, as I’ve revisited these films and given them another chance, I’ve come to appreciate their depth and quality more and more. Nowadays, it seems like an increasing number of gamers, including myself, are finding themselves drawn to these movies. Sadly, the Sequel Trilogy didn’t manage to build upon that aspect as effectively as we had hoped.

Following on from that discussion, someone has recently revisited the Revenge of the Sith video game – you know, as each film had a related game at the time – and found an alternate ending for Lucas’ movie. While it might not fit well within the established continuity (canon), it would certainly make for an intriguing “What If…?” narrative!

The “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” video game came out on May 5, 2005, 10 days prior to the film’s official debut. This early release allowed players to experience the entire plot beforehand, along with 12 minutes of movie cutscenes. This was groundbreaking at the time and hard to envision now. The game received reviews ranging from mixed to positive, and while it may not be one of the greatest “Star Wars” games ever made, it was a strong effort.

Moreover, the game aligns with the film’s narrative and Lucas’ established canon, but it also offers a distinct alternate conclusion. Here’s where you can find that additional ending in the video linked below:

In this revised finale, it’s Anakin who emerges victorious instead. The sequence unfolds just as in the film, but Obi-Wan’s warning about the high ground fails to deter him. Instead, Anakin leaps over and circles behind Obi-Wan, eventually slaying him and pushing him towards the molten river on Mustafar. Unlike in the original storyline, Anakin then turns against his mentor – Darth Sidious (as per Sith custom) – and seizes control of the entire galaxy, ruling over the Empire alone.

In a surprising and intriguing manner, Darth Vader emerges victorious in an unexpected fashion. This twist makes for a compelling and thought-provoking alteration to the usual storyline. Although it deviates from the traditional narrative set forth in the Original Trilogy, it could make for an intriguing “What If…” scenario should Star Wars choose to venture down that path in the future.
