Fans Outraged by ‘Scream 7’ Trailer After Melissa Barrera’s Firing, Calls for Boycott Grow

The initial trailer for Scream 7 received a lot of online backlash, mainly because of the recent issues and debate surrounding Melissa Barrera no longer being involved in the movie series.

Melissa Barrera, known for her roles as Sam Carpenter in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, will not be returning for the next Scream movie. Reports indicate this decision stems from her public statements regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict and her condemnation of violence against Palestinians.

When Barrera left the movie, I was really bummed, and then I found out Jenna Ortega was also out. She explained in an interview that it wasn’t about being busy with other projects. It was because everything behind the scenes with the creative team – what she called ‘the Melissa stuff’ – was falling apart. She’d really connected with the directors and people involved, and without them, she didn’t feel like continuing with Scream VII was the right choice for her career.

The show was reportedly reworked creatively to include returning actors from the series, such as Neve Campbell and Patrick Dempsey.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett were initially set to direct the movie, but Bettinelli-Olpin left the project in December 2023. He explained that the firing of actor Jenna Ortega changed the film significantly, making it different from the one he had originally agreed to direct.

Even though he wasn’t involved in the studio’s decision, Bettinelli-Olpin received harsh online harassment, including threats against him and his family, which led to the FBI getting involved.

It’s been almost two years, and the controversy is flaring up again – the trailer really got people talking online! A lot of us fans were upset about the decision to let go of Jenna Ortega, feeling like it hurt the story and pushed many of us away. It just didn’t feel right.

One viewer expressed disappointment, saying the film had potential but was harmed by the firing of Melissa Barrera after she spoke out against genocide. They also felt the loss of the Carpenter sisters as characters was a significant setback, and that the movie seemed held back by the weaknesses of the overall series.

Many people are calling for a boycott of Scream 7 after Spyglass fired Melissa Barrera for her statements about the situation in Palestine. Supporters shared messages like, “So we are boycotting Scream 7. BDS supports!” Others highlighted a pattern of behavior, noting, “Don’t forget how Paramount treated Melissa Barrera for simply sharing a message of peace.”

The debate over Barrera’s dismissal and how fans responded to the Scream 7 trailer show just how strongly people feel about who gets cast in movies, and how entertainment can sometimes become tied to political issues.
