Fans are getting their first glimpse of Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson in a newly released teaser for the upcoming biopic, titled Michael. The film will tell the story of Michael Jackson’s life and career, from his beginnings with the Jackson 5 through his incredible success as a solo artist.
Antoine Fuqua directed the movie, with a screenplay by John Logan. Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, stars as Michael in his first acting role. The film also features a strong supporting cast, including Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, and Miles Teller as John Branca, an entertainment lawyer. Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, Derek Luke, Jessica Sula, and Kendrick Sampson round out the cast.
The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic has sparked some debate. Paris Jackson, Michael’s daughter, disliked early drafts of the screenplay, feeling they glossed over difficult truths. She also stated she wasn’t involved in making the film and questioned the choice of Miles Teller to play John Branca, worried it might impact how the estate is portrayed.

The movie draws on Michael Jackson’s life, including his personal challenges and accusations of abuse. Producer Graham King aimed to portray him honestly, without glossing over difficult aspects, to tell a balanced story. Some scenes were reshot in early 2025 to resolve legal concerns, but Lionsgate has confirmed the film is still on schedule for release, despite reports of delays.
I just got the details on “Michael,” and it’s hitting IMAX screens on April 24th! Lionsgate is handling distribution here in the US, while Universal Pictures will take care of things overseas, and Kino Films has Japan covered. I heard it screened at CinemaCon last month and the early reactions were really positive. Be warned, though – it’s a commitment! The final cut clocks in around three and a half hours, so plan accordingly.
