Fan-Modded LEGO Game Boy Lets You Plays Actual Games

As a huge fan of both LEGO and classic gaming, I was thrilled when LEGO announced their Game Boy set earlier this year. It looked fantastic as a display piece, but I immediately started wondering if anyone would actually try to *make it work*. It seemed like a crazy idea, and honestly, I didn’t know how it could even be done. But someone actually went ahead and did it! The LEGO Game Boy is now a fully functioning handheld that can play actual Game Boy games, and it just hit stores – it’s amazing!

I am a woman of my word.

I’m absolutely blown away by what Natalie the Nerd has done! She didn’t just build a LEGO Game Boy as a cool display piece – she actually made it *work*! I first read about it on IGN, and it’s incredible. She turned the LEGO set into a fully functional Game Boy, so you can legitimately play games on it. It’s way more than just a tribute – it’s a working console!

We had no idea how to tackle this, but Natalie assured us it wasn’t complicated. She explained it was similar to her work with Game Boy circuit boards, involving components like RAM, the CPU, and basic power regulation – things we were already familiar with.

We figured out that the fake cartridge slot on the LEGO set was crucial to how she modified it. The fact that the LEGO Game Boy’s buttons are actually clickable was also key – without that, it would have been much more difficult to create.

What’s truly remarkable is that she began this project before the official LEGO set was even available. She cleverly used the set’s dimensions to resize an image on her computer, allowing her to calculate the correct measurements for the screen. She then integrated a power circuit from her Safer Charger boards, swapped the power switch for a more user-friendly soft-latching button, and added connections for the buttons and audio.

It’s true, we don’t recognize every detail, but it doesn’t change anything. Someone actually built the LEGO Gameboy we’ve all been imagining, and that’s amazing!
