It used to be that foreign films with dubbed audio just had uninspired voice acting, which was almost charming. Now, though, they’re using artificial intelligence to create English dubs, and the results are terrible – not entertainingly bad, but genuinely awful. According to IGN, the anime series Banana Fish included an “AI beta” English dub option on Prime Video. Fans quickly noticed how poor the AI dub was and started sharing clips online. Prime Video quickly noticed the strong negative response online and removed the feature. Unfortunately, this means there’s now no English dub available at all. Honestly, subtitles are probably a better experience anyway. It’s frustrating that these large companies are so eager to use AI to avoid paying actors and artists, and this is another instance of that happening. Thankfully, fans spotted the change immediately and voiced their concerns.
A recent Forbes article pointed out that using AI for Prime Video might only save around $50,000 – a very small amount for a company as large as Amazon. Many are questioning why they aren’t simply hiring real voice actors, especially since fans have been requesting a quality dub for this series for years. This isn’t an isolated incident; Prime Video previously used AI to dub the Portuguese audio for ‘O Silêncio de Marcos Tremmer’ in February, and the results were similarly poor. Hopefully, these missteps will encourage companies to reconsider their approach in the near future.
