Back in the 1990s, John Travolta and Nicolas Cage were huge movie stars, appearing in one successful film after another. One of their collaborations was the 1997 action movie Face/Off, directed by John Woo, where an FBI agent (Travolta) and a terrorist (Cage) famously swap faces through a radical surgery. Predictably, chaos follows. Recently, a sequel to Face/Off was announced with Adam Wingard, the director of Godzilla x Kong, set to direct. However, The Hollywood Reporter now says Wingard has left the project, and Paramount Pictures is searching for a new director.
Back in 2019, Paramount brought on Oren Uziel, who wrote the screenplay for 22 Jump Street, to write a sequel to Face/Off. That version didn’t move forward, and Uziel later became the showrunner for Spider-Noir, starring Nicolas Cage. Then, in 2021, the studio tapped Adam Wingard to direct Face/Off 2, working from a script he co-wrote with Simon Barrett. In a recent interview, Wingard described the script as surprisingly fantastic, saying it felt like a genuine and unexpected continuation of the original Face/Off movie.
It appears Paramount Pictures wasn’t enthusiastic about the sequel ideas Adam Wingard had for Face/Off. After five years of trying to develop it, the studio is essentially starting over. It’s unclear how they would have brought back a character who died in the first film – but in Hollywood, anything is possible. While a Face/Off sequel might seem appealing, it’s possible the original film’s popularity isn’t strong enough now to justify a costly continuation. The project could still move forward, but it’s just as likely that Face/Off 2 will remain stuck in development indefinitely.
