Guillermo del Toro is known for creating visually stunning and incredibly detailed films, and his latest, Frankenstein, is no exception. His worlds feel real, even without the characters, and this movie – a grand gothic horror and science fiction epic – truly warrants a deep dive into its creation. Thankfully, Insight Editions has delivered just that with the beautiful new book, Art and Making of Frankenstein, penned by Sheila O’Malley. Below, we’re offering an exclusive preview with three full pages from this gorgeous book.

This beautiful coffee table book is packed with exclusive content, including storyboards, concept art, behind-the-scenes photos, and stills from the film. It also features interviews and insights from the people who made the movie. In a sneak peek from The Art and Making of Frankenstein, you can explore the amazing concept designs for Frankenstein’s creature and get a detailed look at the film’s incredible costumes. We’re giving you a close-up view of the stunning white gown worn by Mia Goth as Lady Elizabeth Harlander.
In an exclusive look at the book Art and Making of Frankenstein, costume designer Kate Hawley discussed her design process. She began with a vision of the character wearing a small cape, which she adorned with intricate, fractal patterns, eventually resembling moth wings. This led to the cape being created as a knitted piece incorporating these textures. Hawley aimed to create a beetle-like quality in the marketplace scene, reflected not only in the character’s movements but also in the designs of her bonnets. Interestingly, the interior of the bonnets was intended to evoke an angelic halo, a visual motif also subtly present in the church scenes with the golden edging.
The book, Art and Making of Frankenstein, isn’t just full of beautiful color images and in-depth interviews – it also includes a special introduction by Oscar Isaac, who plays Victor Frankenstein. And if that wasn’t enough, the book also features a foreword by Guillermo del Toro himself! In it, del Toro shares, “You see the creature in the beginning as the Other, and you finish the movie as Us. It is very rare to be able to make a movie about forgiveness.” It’s a truly moving thought.

A fascinating story from the book The Art and Making of Frankenstein reveals how director Guillermo del Toro refined a key moment. After reading the script, Alejandro González Iñárritu suggested that the monster’s impressive strength, previously only shown during the ship attack and wolf fight, needed another outlet. Del Toro then realized the monster could free the ship from the ice, offering a more hopeful ending than the novel’s. Instead of disappearing into the cold, the monster would face the sun and embrace life, even after being attacked by the sailors. This moment, where the creature displays unexpected humanity, signals a deeply thoughtful and compelling story.
For those still curious, the official description of Art and Making of Frankenstein is as follows:
