During an exclusive conversation with TopMob, actor Josh McDermitt (Stuart Lane in Suits LA) discussed his feelings about joining such a long-standing series. When asked about the challenge of entering a world that boasts a large and passionate fan base, he acknowledged that they are mindful of fan anticipations, but their main goal is to develop something new within the Suits universe.
The actor expressed that regardless of which show one performs in, there’s always a sense of expectation – everyone strives for excellence. He doesn’t specifically feel more pressure due to the original series, but their goal with Suits LA is to create a spin-off that continues the story within the same universe.
As an ardent fan myself, I can tell you that it’s not just about creating something; it’s about honoring the fans and making them fall in love with what we’ve made. We have a massive crowd eagerly waiting to witness Harvey and Louis Litt, and let me assure you, they won’t be disappointed. They will get to see both of their favorites!
Although some viewers might anticipate that Suits LA will pick up right where the original series ended, McDermitt made it clear that the spin-off will maintain its unique character. In a conversation with his father, who is an avid fan of Suits, the actor explained, “Simultaneously, we’re crafting our own storylines. It’s amusing because I discussed this with my dad. And he asked, ‘Who’s playing Donna?’ To which I responded, ‘That’s not what this is about. We’re not simply reprising the characters; it’s something new and different.’ And he became genuinely excited about it.
McDermitt underscored the fact that instead of replicating what Suits achieved, the spin-off aims to craft a fresh and captivating narrative. He explained, “There would be greater stress if we were attempting to replicate everything they accomplished. The original Suits was simply phenomenal in its creation. It produced an exceptional show. What Suits LA aspires to create is another equally extraordinary series.
Suits LA is currently streaming on Peacock, with episodes airing on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
