Actor Josh Brolin, recognized for his work in No Country for Old Men and Avengers: Endgame, is venturing into fresh ground with Weapons, a horror-thriller directed by Zach Cregger, who’s known for Barbarian. In an exclusive interview with TopMob, Brolin shared what drew him to this spine-tingling project, describing the script as both deeply personal and potent.
A story that grew on him
Initially, I had my doubts about this project, but as a seasoned actor with four decades under my belt, I’ve learned to view opportunities from a fresh perspective. This particular role caught my attention, even though I hadn’t seen the original film, Barbarian. However, when I read the script for Weapons, I was captivated by its unique structure and intriguing narrative. It was a design that kept pulling me back in.
Initially, Brolin felt inclined to step aside, but each time he revisited the idea, it became increasingly intriguing.
Why working with Zach Cregger made it personal
A significant shift occurred when Brolin had a meeting with director Zach Cregger. “He seemed completely transparent to me,” Brolin explained. “He was almost like, ‘Here’s who I am, my story, where I stand in life, the experiences I’ve had, and the origins of this script.’
Cregger mentioned that the script was influenced by the passing of a dear friend, and each character embodied a piece of his own emotional odyssey. “That aspect particularly intrigued me, which he hinted at during our initial encounter and elaborated further in subsequent meetings,” Brolin said. “I was deeply touched by this. Consequently, it resonated with me on a personal level.
Here’s what made Weapons stand out professionally
Career-wise, Josh Brolin found the script’s structure captivating. He expressed, “The layout of the script was exceptional, as it evoked early Iñárritu and Guillermo Arriaga, the kind of movies that I admire. It’s appealing to me that this creator seems to be inspired by remarkable figures, yet making it uniquely his own.” After watching Barbarian, Brolin became even more convinced, saying, “I truly enjoyed it,” he concluded.
Brolin additionally commended Cregger for being a down-to-earth and emotionally invested director. “He’s quite sensitive as a director,” Brolin stated, “because of his sensitivity, he’s deeply involved, and he prefers it to remain intimate to him. And I appreciate that level of intensity, rather than someone who’s just making a movie for financial gain. Of course, we all aim to make a substantial amount of money, but this is meaningful to him.
