Warner Bros. has formally decided that “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” will hit theaters on December 17, 2027. Andy Serkis is returning to direct and once again take up his motion-capture character, Gollum, which marks the launch of a new live-action film in the franchise after more than a decade.
A Familiar Holiday Release Window
In December, both “The Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies were initially released, and a new movie is set to premiere in the same month. The film’s release date in December 2027 sets up “Gollum” for another substantial Christmas season at the box office. So far, the combined earnings of the six previous films totaled approximately $2.9 billion worldwide.
Serkis Back in Control
Andy Serkis, who has portrayed Gollum since 2002’s “The Two Towers”, is again spearheading this project, taking on roles both in front of and behind the camera. His previous directorial works encompass “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle”.
The film was originally planned for 2026 but has been delayed one year.
Last year in May, Serkis hinted, “Indeed, Precious. It’s time again to explore the unknown with my cherished companions, the remarkable and unparalleled protectors of Middle Earth, Peter, Fran, and Philippa. Accompanied by Mike, Pam, and the Warner Bros team on this adventure, along with WETA and our filmmaking family in New Zealand, it’s simply too tantalizing…
Peter Jackson Involved
Peter Jackson, together with his consistent partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are overseeing the creation of “The Hunt for Gollum“. Warner Bros. highlights that Jackson’s crew will play an active role in each phase of the production process.
Boyens recently shared with Empire that the narrative occurs following Bilbo’s birthday celebration and preceding the occurrences in Moria, labeling it as a “dramatic” unspoken segment in the chronology of The Lord of the Rings, centering around Gollum’s viewpoint.
When the movie was initially announced, Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens expressed their joy and respect by stating, “We’re thrilled and grateful to return to Middle-earth alongside our trusted colleague, Andy Serkis, who still has some unresolved matters with that character – Gollum! As lifelong enthusiasts of Professor Tolkien’s rich mythology, we feel privileged to collaborate with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy, and the entire Warner Bros. crew on another exhilarating journey!
Casting Still in Question
While no formal casting decisions have been announced yet, it’s been hinted that stars from the original trilogy such as Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, and Viggo Mortensen might reprise their roles if the narrative aligns with their interests.
Last Rings Film Was Anime
In a new development, “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” marks the first live-action film in the series since “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” which was released in 2014. Previously, the only theatrical release was the animated “War of the Rohirrim” in 2024, a production that didn’t fare well and is reportedly from an earlier management team at Warner Bros.
