As a devoted fan of House of the Dragon, I must say that the second season has truly outdone itself in its exploration of sacrifice and power plays. Among the characters, Prince Regent Aemond stands out as one who is willing to make significant sacrifices, often at great personal cost. His unwavering commitment to his ambition, even if it means betraying loved ones or committing heinous acts, makes him a formidable and chilling figure.
The second season of “House of the Dragon” is rich with multiple storylines, intricate plots, and profound themes. One such theme is sacrifice, which the series portrays in a striking and frequently emotional manner. Characters like Alicent are ready to give up something as significant as Aegon’s head to Rhaenyra, while Rhaenys sacrifices her life for the Black faction. The individuals involved are prepared to make substantial decisions to triumph in the war. This season, Prince Regent Aemond demonstrates numerous acts of sacrifice, coming close to killing his brother Aegon to gain power and burning an entire town out of wrath to convey a message to Rhaenyra. He also frequently speaks about sacrifice, urging others to endure discomfort or fear to ensure their survival.
Could there be anything that might cause Aemond, who seems unfazed in his role as a dragonrider, to crack under pressure? According to Ewan Mitchell, it’s the loss of his trusted dragon, Vhagar, that Aemond couldn’t afford to part with.
In a recent interview, Mitchell explains that Vhagar was Targaryen prince Aemond’s very first friend. This friendship started when Vhagar was the first creature to acknowledge and show Aemond some form of care. Aemond might not have recognized it himself, but Vhagar saw something special in him. If Aemond were to lose Vhagar, he would be devastated. The bond between Aemond and Vhagag is strong; they are like a power couple. So far, Aemond hasn’t reached his breaking point, but it remains to be seen.
Throughout the season, we’ve seen the bond between this duo flourish at an incredible rate. As the overlooked younger son yearning for affection and companionship, Vhagar serves as a connection and ally. It’s unlikely that House of the Dragon will separate Vhagar from Aemond in the near future. For now, his dragon is the one thing that could shatter Aemond’s heart completely. This makes him arguably the most formidable character on the show as we move into season three.
