The DC Universe is broadening its horizons, bringing in fresh management and an exciting lineup of intertwined movies and series. A key aspect of this new phase involves the arrival of a novel Supergirl. This incarnation of the character is expected to be a departure from past screen adaptations, presenting a more intricate and battle-hardened heroine for viewers to explore.
Gods and Monsters.
This strategy intends to blend established DC Comics heroes with less familiar faces, resulting in a vibrant and multifaceted movie world. The “Supergirl” movie plays a pivotal role during the early stages of this endeavor.
The upcoming movie, previously referred to as “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” will now be known solely as “Supergirl.” This film is set for release on June 26, 2026. Australian actress Milly Alcock has been cast in the main role of Kara Zor-El.
A large number of people are likely to remember Alcock from her standout role as the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the hit show “House of the Dragon.” It was James Gunn who announced her casting, expressing admiration for her auditions and tests, stating that she perfectly captured the “edge, elegance [and] sincerity” required to portray this fresh take on the character.
This fresh take on Supergirl is significantly influenced by the 2021-22 comic book series, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” penned by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. In this narrative, Kara appears as a more worldly and emotionally battered character.
Instead of growing up among humans like her renowned relative, Superman, this Supergirl spent her early years on a surviving fragment of Krypton, witnessing the demise and devastation of her kin. This traumatic past has given her a more cynical and tough demeanor than viewers might anticipate.
In the upcoming movie, I’ll be embarking on an enlightening voyage through the cosmos. Along the way, I’ll join forces with a spirited alien girl called Ruthye Marye Knoll. She’s on a mission of vengeance, seeking retribution against the individual who took her father’s life.
Ana Nogueira is penning the script for the upcoming movie, with Craig Gillespie – famed for his work on ‘I, Tonya’ and ‘Cruella’ – set to take the director’s chair. The secondary cast features Eve Ridley portraying Ruthye Marye Knoll, while Matthias Schoenaerts assumes the role of the antagonist, Krem of the Yellow Hills.
Additional actors joining the cast are David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham, set to play Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, Supergirl’s parents, in scenes depicting Krypton’s final moments. Moreover, Jason Momoa is expected to make an appearance as the cosmic bounty hunter Lobo.
Prior to starring in her own movie, Milly Alcock first appeared on screen as Supergirl in the 2025 Superman film, making a brief cameo. Towards the end of the movie, a disheveled Kara, Supergirl herself, showed up at the Fortress of Solitude to collect her pet dog, Krypto, implying that Superman had been looking after him during her absence.
In this opening segment, I offered viewers a tiny sneak peek into my unruly and untidy character traits, laying the groundwork for my own film. The vignette also subtly alluded to the graphic novel’s plot, where Kara is discovered sipping drinks on a planet with a crimson sun, as she can’t get tipsy under a yellow one.
Filming for Supergirl reportedly took place in England and Scotland from January to May of 2025.
