Everything We Know About DC’s CREATURE COMMANDOS

As a longtime comic book enthusiast and fan of the macabre, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming animated series “Creature Commandos” on Max from DC Studios! Growing up reading the horror/World War II combat comics that headlined DC Comics’ “Weird War Tales,” I never thought I would see this obscure gem adapted into an animation, let alone with such a star-studded cast and the masterful storytelling of James Gunn.

Prior to the release of James Gunn’s Superman movie, the initial offering in the freshly minted cinematic DC Universe is the upcoming animated series, Max – Creature Commandos. Inspired by the chilling/World War II battle comic strip that was a mainstay in DC Comics’ Weird War Tales anthology, this show revolves around an exceptional team assembled by Amanda Waller (voiced again by Viola Davis).

Here’s what we have gathered thus far regarding the forthcoming “Creature Commandos” series, set to air on DC Studios.

Title

The official title for the upcoming Max series is Creature Commandos.

Creature Commandos’ Plot

Just like the DC’s Suicide Squad, the Creature Commandos revolve around a special ops team assembled by Amanda Waller, much in the same way she gathered super-powered felons for Task Force X. Following the events of Peacemaker’s first season, Amanda Waller recognizes that endangering more human lives or risking everything is no longer an option for her.

Instead of employing human inmates, she opts to recruit a number of non-human creatures instead. This new team is named Task Force M, with ‘M’ representing monster. In this series, the shape-shifting villain Clayface will appear for the first time in the DC Universe, making him the inaugural Batman character to be cast within it.

The “Creature Commandos” comic book series originated from a relatively unknown work by writer J. M. DeMatteis in the early ’80s. This unique concept features classic Universal Monsters, such as a vampire, Frankenstein monster, werewolf, and gorgon, battling in World War II under Project M. Their adventures were initially published in “Weird War Tales,” and later they had their own mini-series. At the New York Comic-Con 2024, actor Alan Tudyk hinted that the series will delve into the characters’ origins and it promises to be both darkly humorous and terrifying, but never goofy. Similar to the Suicide Squad, the Creature Commandos operate from Belle Reve prison. The upcoming series is expected to seamlessly tie in with “Peacemaker” season two.

Behind-the-Scenes

James Gunn, one of the co-heads at DC Studios, penned all seven episodes of the series himself. Prior to his role at DC Studios, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn had been working on the development of the animated series “Creature Commandos.” Bobbypills animation studio was involved in the project, and Kevin Kiner and Clint Mansell were responsible for creating the score for “Creature Commandos.

Creature Commandos’ Cast

The voice cast features Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Sr.), David Harbour (Eric Frankenstein), Zoë Chao (Nina Mazursky), Steve Agee (John Economos), Indira Varma (The Bride), Maria Bakalova (Princess Ilana), Alan Tudyk (Dr. Phosphorus), Sean Gunn (GI Robot and Weasel), and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Also part of the cast are former Gunn associates Linda Cardellini and Michael Rooker. Benjamin Byron Davis voices Batman villain and crime boss Rupert Thorne. Anya Chalotra will play the longtime Wonder Woman villain Circe, an ancient mythological witch. Also cast in the show is Peter Serafinowicz, of Shaun of the Dead fame, and the original voice of Darth Maul. Frank Grillo is reprising his role of Rick Flag Sr. for the second season of Peacemaker.
