The Predator series has captivated audiences for almost four decades, providing an exhilarating blend of sci-fi, action, and horror that revolves around extraterrestrial hunters chasing humans. From dense jungles to sprawling cities to ancient terrains, the Yautja’s lethal hunts have left an indelible mark on cinema.
Across a total of eight movies, ranging from solo adventures to interconnected stories, this collection has had both successful and less-than-stellar moments. I’ve organized them in ascending order of quality, starting with the least impressive and culminating in the undeniably best, considering both their inherent value and overall influence.
8. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)
In this narrative I’ve found myself immersed in, crafted by the Strause Brothers, a hybrid creature known as ‘Predalien’ makes an appearance in a quaint Colorado town following a Predator spacecraft accident. A solitary Predator, named Wolf, pursues the ensuing turmoil, but the movie seems disorganized due to its blurry and unclear visuals.
In this narrative, the human figures seem shallow and the action, while violent, is confusing to keep up with. Even with impressive special effects involving creatures, the storyline’s weakness undermines its impact. Despite my eagerness to support Wolf, the disorganized plot failed to ignite any enthusiasm within me.
7. The Predator (2018)
In a new take by Shane Black, the story revolves around a soldier who discovers Predator technology, which subsequently attracts advanced Yautja to our planet. Unfortunate events unfold as the soldier’s autistic son becomes the target, prompting a team, featuring Olivia Munn and Boyd Holbrook, to band together and protect him from these extraterrestrial threats.
The actors shine, but the narrative appears disorganized, particularly in its hurried conclusion. Black’s wit brings charm, but the blend of sci-fi and suburban settings seems mismatched. Despite enjoying the characters’ interactions, the storyline feels overly complex.
6. Alien vs. Predator (2004)
In Paul W.S. Anderson’s mashup, Predators and Xenomorphs clash within an Antarctic pyramid, leaving Sanaa Lathan’s human character sandwiched between them. The PG-13 rating serves to soften the graphic violence, which somewhat dilutes the film’s intensity.
The concept of old-age Predator vs Xenomorph conflicts is thrilling, yet the narrative seems to lack a punch. The frozen backdrop appears chilly, but it could have been made more intense. Despite this, I found the space war atmosphere quite appealing, though it felt overly polished.
5. Predator 2 (1990)
In Stephen Hopkins’ follow-up, the chase shifts to the bustling cityscape of Los Angeles, where Danny Glover’s law enforcement officer confronts a Predator amidst the turmoil of gang conflicts. The urban backdrop offers a unique twist, with high-octane action sequences and a spine-tingling Yautja trophy room adding to the suspense.
In a fresh take, Glover’s intense portrayal powers the movie, yet it lacks the raw intensity of the original. At certain points, the tempo seems to slow down. The concept of the city as a hunting ground was intriguing, but it didn’t quite reach the peak of excitement experienced in the first installment.
4. Predators (2010)
As a cinephile, I can’t help but express my excitement for Nimród Antal’s film that hurls a team of ruthless killers, fronted by Adrien Brody, onto an extraterrestrial hunting ground once frequented by the Predators. In this gripping survival tale, the star-studded cast, featuring Laurence Fishburne and Walton Goggins, truly outshine as they navigate the challenges of an alien world.
As a cinephile, I must say that the fresh Predator designs and jungle ambiance definitely brought back memories of the original masterpiece. However, the ending left me wanting more. The chilling atmosphere was undeniably captivating. Despite some characters lacking complexity, the concept of humans-as-prey kept my pulse racing throughout the film.
3. Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)
This animated collection, led by Dan Trachtenberg, presents three stories about Yautja hunts set in Viking Scandinavia, feudal Japan, and World War II. The narration is handled by Lindsay LaVanchy, Rick Gonzalez, Louis Ozawa Changchien, and Michael Biehn, providing intense action sequences.
The animation is vibrant, seamlessly combining grisly scenes with breathtaking imagery. A climactic battle in an arena serves as a conclusion, enhancing the narrative’s mythology. I was captivated by the brutal intensity of the Viking hunt and the tactical air combat during World War II.
2. Prey (2022)
Dan Trachtenberg’s prequel presents the story of Comanche warrior Naru, portrayed by Amber Midthunder, confronting a Savage Predator in 1719. This tale unfolds on the expansive Great Plains, offering a captivating blend of heart-pounding pursuits and breathtaking scenery. Naru’s quest to establish her worth is an intriguing twist.
This Comanche-dubbed version brings an authentic feel, while the straightforward narrative harks back to the original franchise’s essence. I found myself captivated by Naru’s cunning traps and the genuine terror of the Predator. It’s a daring, exciting comeback that truly delivers.
1. Predator (1987)
In the original movie directed by John McTiernan, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the main character Dutch, leading a team of commandos including Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura, deep into a dense jungle. Here, they encounter an alien hunter disguised as a cloaked figure, portrayed by Kevin Peter Hall. This film masterfully combines elements of action, terror, and science fiction.
Stan Winston’s creature designs and Alan Silvestri’s music build an intense atmosphere. Dutch’s smart, mud-soaked confrontation is iconic. The moment Arnold says “Get to the chopper!” still gives me chills – it’s the height of that franchise’s excellence.
