‘Even My Breathing Was Different’: Lady Gaga Reveals How She Changed Her Singing Voice For Harley Quinn Role In Joker: Folie A Deux

As a die-hard fan of both Lady Gaga and the Joker universe, I can hardly contain my excitement for the release of “Joker: Folie à Deux.” The latest trailer has only intensified my anticipation, with the return of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (the Joker) and the introduction of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with you all! The Joker mania is once again sweeping through the world, and I can’t contain my excitement as we get another glimpse into the twisted minds of our favorite characters in the latest trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux.” This intriguing follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster “Joker,” produced by Warner Bros. and DC, is set to make its grand entrance onto the big screen on October 4, 2024.

“People call me Lady Gaga when I’m performing, but in this film, I’m portraying a different character. I put effort into singing from her perspective rather than my own as an artist.”

The pop music queen acknowledged the importance of accurately portraying the story and character in this film, so she adapted her vocal performance as Harley Quinn (also known as Lee) in an unprecedented way by modifying her singing voice and breathing technique for her audience’s surprise.

Lady Gaga on how she changed her voice for this film

Gaga explained that to accurately portray her character Lee, she had to make a complete transformation. “To be honest, there are quite a few off-key moments from me as Lee,” she joked about her singing in the film. “As a professionally trained singer, even my breathing changed when I sang as Lee.”

Additionally, she explained that during her stage performances, she carefully manages her breath control and maintains the correct pitch. She sustains the rhythm and duration appropriately. However, Lee is unaware of these techniques. Consequently, it’s as if she’s eliminating the technical aspects and straying from the perceived artistic genre that defines her identity.

More on Joker: Folie à Deux

As a devoted fan, I’d express it this way: In “Folie à Deux,” my beloved character Arthur Fleck, portrayed brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix, encounters Harley Quinn, played by the extraordinary Lady Gaga, while under the care at Arkham State Hospital following the events of 2019’s Oscar-winning “Joker.” Upon their release, we witness an ill-fated romantic journey as they embark on a tumultuous adventure together.

The first Joker film, a major hit both critically and commercially, received 11 Oscar nominations. Joaquin Phoenix took home the best actor award, while Hildur Guðnadóttir won for original score. This groundbreaking production became the highest-grossing movie in history with an R rating.

In “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey join the star-studded cast in supporting roles. Notably, Zazie Beetz reprises her role as Sophie from the initial film.

In the meantime, if you’re pondering the reason behind the title “Folie à Deux” for the upcoming Joker sequel, let me explain. This French term translates to “madness of two,” alluding to a mental affliction shared by a pair in close proximity. The trailer hints at this as Arthur Fleck is no longer solo; Harley Quinn joins him, and they embark on their chaotic journey together.
