Hunter Schafer, an actress best known for her role in HBO’s Euphoria alongside Zendaya, expressed astonishment when she discovered her new passport identified her as male. She openly voiced her opinions on the recent policy implemented under former President Donald Trump’s administration.
26-year-old actress Cuckoo shared her unexpected challenge in obtaining a new passport after the old one was stolen, on a TikTok video posted on February 21st. She explained that this issue arose due to an executive order signed by Trump on January 20th, which mandates that U.S. official documents like passports display only the sex listed at birth.
According to Schafer’s report, the Bureau of Consular Affairs has temporarily stopped processing passport applications and renewals for those requesting a gender marker different from their assigned sex at birth. The agency’s website clarifies that issued passports will only display male (M) or female (F) markers based on an individual’s biological sex determined at birth.
In a TikTok video, the actress who starred in The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes expressed her surprise when she found out that her passport had been labeled as male today. She had not expected this change to occur.
Initially, Schafer dismissed the policy change as political maneuvering; however, upon receiving her passport, she was taken aback to discover that her gender designation had been altered to male. She clarified that she had embraced her identity at a young age and for years, all of her official records, including her driver’s license, have listed her as female.
In the past, Schafer mentioned that she followed the same process during previous renewals, selecting ‘female’ as her gender option. However, upon receiving the fresh passport, she found out that her gender marker had been changed without her explicit consent.
She shared, “This is an occurrence I haven’t experienced before since I updated my gender identity; it’s been almost a decade now. I genuinely feel this is linked to the leadership running our nation at present.
Schafer emphasized to her audience, “I believe it’s crucial to convey that this isn’t just empty words; it’s a genuine reality unfolding,” and further added, “I don’t care about the letter M on my passport. It doesn’t alter who I am or my identity as transgender. Nevertheless, it does add a layer of difficulty to my life.
Although she acknowledged her advantage as a well-known, white transgender woman, she underscored that this occurrence underscores the genuine impact of government regulations on the transgender community. She was apprehensive about future difficulties when traveling abroad, fearing she might be compelled to frequently disclose her transgender identity at customs.
Hunter Schafer concluded her statement by reinforcing the resilience of the transgender community, emphasizing that a passport designation doesn’t alter her identity. She urged focus on these policy modifications and their broader implications for trans individuals navigating legal documentation processes.
