Esposito Shares How Fan Casting as Professor X Paved the Way for His Role in ‘Captain America 4’: “They’ve done Professor X, but would love to do something new”

As a longtime Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude for Giancarlo Esposito’s journey in the MCU. The man who once dreamt of playing Professor X is now set to bring Sidewinder to life in Captain America: Brave New World. It’s like watching a superhero origin story unfold right before our eyes!

The movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World,” which is Marvel’s penultimate film in Phase Five, is set to hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, 2025. Fans are eagerly anticipating this production, where Anthony Mackie steps into the role of Captain America, replacing Chris Evans’ character Steve Rogers. However, there will be some unexpected twists along the way.

Apart from Mackie, a number of significant characters are also set to feature in the movie. Harrison Ford steps into the shoes of Thaddeus Ross previously played by the late William Hurt. Tim Blake Nelson reprises his role as The Leader, and Giancarlo Esposito debuts as the antagonist Sidewinder within the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time.

In a recent statement, Esposito describes his villain as “complicated” and expresses excitement about the upcoming revelation of Sidewinder’s background as the story unfolds. Unlike the cunning and deceitful characters he has portrayed before, Sidewinder is characterized by his physical prowess and reliance on strength and abilities.

Apart from the fact that Esposito appreciates it when this character challenges common comic book norms, he recently announced in a public setting that he’ll once more don the costume for promoting the film at the D23 event in Brazil.

I’ve enjoyed being part of the Captain America filming, but I’ll be returning next week for some additional work. I can hardly contain my excitement! Let me slip back into that suit once more.

Additionally, Esposito disclosed the story of how his Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure started. Previously, fans had been speculating about him portraying Professor X, a part he was keen on assuming. Yet, events unfolded differently, and Esposito leveraged his fan following to secure a distinct role instead.

The events unfolded due to fan speculation. Specifically, at a comic convention several years ago, someone asked about Professor X, to which I responded enthusiastically about my love for the character and my desire to portray him. This sparked a lot of attention on social media. Over time, this interest continued to grow, going back approximately four years now. It kept growing, and growing.

Last year, I found myself at the Emmy’s, and I couldn’t resist asking my manager, “Hey, have the Marvel folks caught wind that fans are hoping for me to play Professor X? That seems to be what the fans want.” He replied casually, “Yeah, they’re in the loop.” Later on, we bumped into one of their top executives. Turns out, they’ve tackled Professor X before and they’re eager to explore fresh ideas!

As a die-hard fan, I can proudly say that it was the unwavering backing from fellow enthusiasts that played a significant part in securing me a spot within this beloved series – even though the iconic Professor X role wasn’t up for grabs.

I thank the fans and I’m gonna thank you again tonight.

In light of Esposito’s remarks concerning Professor X and his comment that “things won’t remain unchanged,” we can’t help but express our excitement to discover more, given the impending live-action reboot of the X-Men series.
