The final episode of “The Last of Us” season two was extremely violent, with many characters meeting their end. Of course, the most significant death occurred early in this season when Abby mercilessly killed Joel. However, other deaths in the finale were just as gruesome. So who lived and who died? And did your favorite characters survive the “The Last of Us” season two finale? Let’s explore together as we analyze all the deaths that took place in the last episode of “The Last of Us”.

Ellie Kills Owen When He Reaches for His Gun in the Aquarium

In the final episode of The Last of Us season two, Ellie tracks down Abby to the Seattle Aquarium. However, she encounters Owen and Mel, two of Abby’s Firefly companions instead. Facing them with a gun in hand, she forces them to disclose Abby’s whereabouts following a conversation she overheard about Abby’s plans. Owen feigns compliance with Ellie’s demands, but at the critical moment, he dives for his weapon rather than revealing Abby’s location on a map. In response, Ellie fires and kills Owen instantly.

Ellie Inadvertently Murders Mel, Leading to the Death of Her Baby

Unfortunately, even though it’s evident that Ellie didn’t intend to kill Mel when she fired at Owen, the bullet couldn’t be steered. In ‘The Last of Us’ season two, this moment is incredibly heart-wrenching. As Mel starts to fade away, she implores Ellie to extract her baby in a desperate attempt to give it a chance at life. Ellie grabs a knife and urges Mel to assist her in the cuts, but before they can proceed, Mel, still questioning whether the baby is delivered and speaking incoherently, succumbs to her injuries. In her pursuit of revenge against Abby, Ellie ultimately takes the lives of both Mel and the baby.

Jesse Meets His End

It’s truly heart-wrenching that Jesse passed away. He was an exceptional character in “The Last of Us” season two, displaying a strong moral code and genuine goodness. We were also eagerly anticipating the unique, charming portrayal of Dina, Jesse, and Ellie nurturing their unconventional yet beautiful family, complete with the birth of Dina and Jesse’s child. However, unfortunately, this heartwarming vision did not materialize.

In the climactic moments, finding myself in the theater, I was compelled to take aim and fire at Jesse when he and Ellie burst in after hearing Tommy’s frantic cries. His demise was swift and without ceremony, a mournful finale for one of my beloved characters on The Last of Us. Yet, this series is known for its unflinching brutality, so I can’t say I was taken aback. Farewell, Jesse. We’ll already feel your absence deeply.

Is Tommy Dead After The Last of Us Season 2 Finale?

In the finale of The Last of Us season two, Abby attacked Tommy, but it seemed like Tommy was still alive after Jesse’s demise. However, as the scene progresses, it’s unclear whom Abby shoots at in the end. While Tommy isn’t dead on The Last of Us yet, his situation certainly isn’t promising.

Ellie Does Not Kill Nora, Confirms the Finale

In the final episode of The Last of Us season two, contrary to expectations, Nora does not meet her end. During episode six, Ellie pursues Nora, a companion of Abby, into a chamber teeming with infectious spores. Ellie subjected Nora to cruel treatment using a pipe, attempting to extract Abby’s whereabouts. However, it is revealed in the finale that Nora survives, albeit at a terrible cost – she becomes infected and faces a fate far more harrowing than death.

Shimmer Is Still Alive!

In a more positive twist, let’s wrap up our discussion about deaths in the finale of The Last of Us, by mentioning that Shimmer is still alive according to Jesse in the episode. While Ellie didn’t ask, it’s reassuring to know this. Interestingly, in the game The Last of Us Part II, Shimmer does perish in Seattle. Whether this means her death has been postponed or not remains unclear. But for now, we’re relieved not to have another horse death added to all the other hardships.

The Last of Us season two is now airing in full on HBO and HBO Max.
