As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Jon Bernthal is working diligently on a standalone Punisher project for Disney+. This exciting spin-off promises to continue the storyline from his captivating return in “Daredevil: Born Again”.
A new rumor claims the villain of the special will be a female crime boss.
The rumor comes via scooper Daniel RPK. No further details are known.
Punisher Special villain could be Ma Gnucci
It’s being widely suggested that Maggie “Ma” Gnucci, a character from the Marvel universe, may be portrayed as a brutal mob matriarch and a formidable adversary for the Punisher. This is not yet confirmed, but it has sparked intrigue among fans.
In the “Welcome Back, Frank” saga, which unfolded in The Punisher Vol. 5 #4 (2000), penned by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Ma Gnucci took charge of the Gnucci crime clan, emerging as a key character.
Or, more casually:
Ma Gnucci, the boss of the Gnucci family, made her mark in the “Welcome Back, Frank” storyline found in The Punisher Vol. 5 #4 (2000), written by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon.
In the narrative, as the Punisher once again takes up his fight against criminality in New York City, he signals his return by eliminating the three offspring of Isabella “Ma” Gnucci, a formidable matriarch who leads one of the city’s remaining significant Mafia groups.
Afterward, she plots retribution, causing a heated clash at the Central Park Zoo, where he unleashes creatures, inciting havoc. Ma gets savagely attacked by polar bears, suffering severe injuries including loss of her scalp and all four limbs, yet she manages to live. A fortnight later, she announces a $10 million reward for the capture of the Punisher and hires an almost unstoppable assassin called the Russian to complete the task. The Russian was previously depicted in the 2004 movie ‘The Punisher’ by Kevin Nash, while Billy Clements has recently portrayed him in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.
Punisher Special details
The special featuring The Punisher was initially unveiled as early as February, preceding the debut of Daredevil: Reborn.
Bernthal is collaborating on a special production with Reinaldo Marcus Green. Not only is Green writing alongside him, but he’s also set to direct this project. Green has previously directed Bernthal in “We Own This City.
Previously, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of TV and Animation said the special is “so exciting.”
He remarked, “It’s similar to a rapid-fire narrative, yet it carries every bit of empathy and intensity you’d expect from a Punisher tale.
Bernthal enormously protective of the Punisher
In 2021, before becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jon Bernthal expressed that The Punisher holds significant personal resonance for him. He indicated that he would reprise the role only if it was executed appropriately.
That specific character holds an incredibly profound significance for me, striking a chord deep within me. He’s not just in my heart, but also in the very marrow of my bones. I feel an overwhelming sense of guardianship towards this character. To clarify, there are few things in life more precious to me than my wife and children, and it is only when you comprehend that level of love – a love so intense that one would willingly lay down their life for another – that you can grasp the anguish and terror I feel at the thought of someone taking them away. This emotional turmoil, this dark path, is something I have spent the last two decades trying to escape from. Therefore, I was both grateful, reverent, and wary of the paths that role took me down and the environment in which I had to exist.
Essentially, that character must be placed in a dark environment. Maintaining this level of darkness is crucial to stay true to the character’s essence across all versions, comics, and fan interpretations. This character holds significant importance for those in the military, so I reiterate my previous point: it’s not about if you portray the character, but rather how accurately you portray them. All I aim for is an authentic representation.
What’s next for Jon Bernthal?
I’m absolutely thrilled to share that the sequel to “The Accountant,” featuring Jon Bernthal alongside Ben Affleck, has just been released! On top of that, he’s set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.” Additionally, his name is popping up in pre-production for “His & Hers” and “Snow Ponies,” making me even more excited about what’s coming next from this talented actor!
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is also in the works.
