Eric Dane, GREY’S ANATOMY McSteamy Actor, Dead at 53

Actor Eric Dane, famous for playing Dr. Mark Sloan (nicknamed “McSteamy”) on the TV show Grey’s Anatomy, has passed away at the age of 53 after a battle with ALS.

Eric Dane sadly passed away on Thursday afternoon, February 20th. He had publicly shared his diagnosis of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in April 2025, after battling symptoms for over a year. ALS is a rare disease that progressively affects the nerves controlling muscles. His representatives released a statement confirming his death.

In his final days, Eric was surrounded by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia, who meant everything to him. He bravely fought ALS and dedicated himself to raising awareness and finding a cure for the disease, hoping to help others. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. Eric cherished his fans and was thankful for all their love and support. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time.

Eric Dane, originally from San Francisco, began his acting career in 1991 with a guest appearance on Saved by the Bell. He became widely known in 2006 for his role as the popular plastic surgeon, nicknamed “McSteamy,” on Grey’s Anatomy, a character he played for eight years. Dane has also had significant roles in several other television series, including five seasons as a Navy captain on The Last Ship, a guest role on Charmed, and as Nate Jacob’s father in HBO’s Euphoria. He’s also appeared in films like X-Men: The Last Stand and Marley & Me, alongside Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston. His more recent projects include Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024), Borderline (2025), and Brilliant Minds.

After sharing his ALS diagnosis in 2025, Dane became a passionate voice for those living with the disease. He openly discussed his experiences and challenges on social media and in interviews, and dedicated himself to raising money for ALS research. In December, he further committed to this work by joining the Target ALS Board of Directors.

Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters. He’s fondly remembered, including for his memorable first appearance as ‘McSteamy’ – famously appearing only in a towel.
