In a surprising and significant joint venture, Batman and Deadpool are squaring off in an unusual crossover event. This collaboration will debut with two special standalone comics: “Deadpool/Batman #1,” released by Marvel in September, and “Batman/Deadpool #1,” published by DC in November.
This marks the first major team-up between the two publishers in decades.
Marvel details: Zeb Wells, Greg Capullo
The highly anticipated collaboration between Marvel’s Deadpool and Batman, penned by Zeb Wells and the renowned artist Greg Capullo, is set to hit shelves on September 17th.
In addition to the main event, this one-off will feature an assortment of side stories that pit Marvel and DC characters against each other. The creative teams behind these tales, along with specific details, are yet to be revealed. Deadpool is set to face off against Batman in a historic meeting between Marvel and DC comics after decades apart. Wade Wilson has taken on a task in Gotham City, but it remains uncertain if Batman will offer a warm welcome.
After penning 60 issues of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (2022), I requested some downtime from Marvel. Instead of granting me a break, they offered me the opportunity to write a comic featuring Deadpool and Batman, with an artist known as the best in the current generation. Clearly, I no longer needed a rest. In this story, we’ve introduced a Batman character who is even less tolerant of Deadpool’s misadventures than Wolverine, but a city-wide menace from the Joker forces these two unlikely allies together. It’s been an exciting journey to let Deadpool run amok in Gotham City and observe the chaos that ensues.
Is this a fantasy or reality? This collaboration might just be the pinnacle of my professional journey…and let me tell you, I’ve had quite a ride. Some of my earliest work was on X-Force (1991), so Deadpool and I go a long way back. More recently, I spent over a decade illustrating Batman at DC. The fact that I get to work on a crossover event with Deadpool and Batman…If this is a dream, I hope you don’t wake me up!
DC details: Grant Morrison, Dan Mora; Jim Lee reacts
In the upcoming comic book “Batman/Deadpool #1” from DC Comics, renowned writer Grant Morrison, famous for his stellar work on both “Batman” and “X-Men”, will be penning the story, while Dan Mora, a highly sought-after artist within DC Comics, will handle the illustrations.
Morrison labeled the project as a chaotic mix of breaking the 4th wall, owls, gore, swords, and at least one colossal typewriter.
Or:
Morrison referred to the project as a blend of “breaking the 4th wall, owls, bloodshed, sharp objects, and no less than one enormous typewriter.”
Or:
Morrison characterized the project as a whirlwind of “violating the 4th wall, owl sightings, spilled blood, edged weapons, and at least one titanic typewriter.
Grant Morrison stated, ‘I don’t engage in numerous comics these days, but I couldn’t resist the opportunity to collaborate with Dan Mora once more, who is among my favorite artistic partners. And certainly, there was no way I could pass up working on Batman and Deadpool!’ Expect a dose of chaos involving breaking the fourth wall, owls, bloodshed, blades, and at least one colossal typewriter!
Mora considered it a dream to illustrate both Deadpool and Batman, and he eagerly seized the chance to work alongside Morrison once more.
Dan Mora expressed, “This surpasses anything I thought possible in my career, and it’s an immense privilege to contribute to this unique collaboration. Such events are not common, and I’m overjoyed as I’m a big Deadpool enthusiast!” Working with Grant initially was uncertain, but it turned out to be an outstanding partnership. I’ve always yearned for another opportunity to work with him, and working on Batman/Deadpool feels like a dream realized. Collaborating with Grant once more on this one-of-a-kind project is going to make for a delightful journey.
Jim Lee commended both artists, stating, “Combining Grant and Dan was an inspired decision. Grant has a deep understanding of these characters, and Dan’s crisp, energetic artwork perfectly encapsulates the current state of the DC Universe.
Jim Lee, DC President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer, shared that the story they’re working on is exceptionally inventive, in line with Grant Morrison’s renowned creativity. He added that artist Dan Mora is currently doing an outstanding job and is a visionary for the DC Universe. Mora’s style, Lee said, is both dynamic and clean, with elements reminiscent of Curt Swan and Gil Kane. The combination of these two talented individuals, according to Lee, was the ideal choice to bring this unique crossover to life. Moreover, Lee mentioned that Morrison has had significant runs on X-Men and Batman, giving him a deep understanding of these universes and the characters within them, which he translates into engaging, imaginative, and entertaining work. In essence, Lee is looking forward to fans getting a chance to read this collaboration.
Backup Stories and More
Apart from the main narrative in the Morrison-Mora tale, the comic book Batman/Deadpool #1 also includes several additional stories. These tales focus on encounters between characters from DC and Marvel universes. The creative teams for these back-up stories will be unveiled shortly.
Marvel Gets the First Shot
Marvel is set to release the one-shot comic book titled “Deadpool/Batman #1” in September, a full two months before DC’s corresponding publication. As of now, there are no details available regarding the extra creative team involved or the content featured in this issue.
The “crossover” is referred to as something that’s taken over twenty years to develop, and it’s a component of a broader collaborative project between these two giant comic companies.
What’s Next
In the upcoming months, both DC and Marvel will unveil further details about this exciting project. For now, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of a special crossover – either ‘Deadpool vs Batman’ in September or ‘Batman vs Deadpool‘ in November. Each of these stories promises its unique interpretation of the classic ‘Batman versus Deadpool’ theme.
